Red Sonja

On this #SomethingElseSunday, we’re taking a look at something fairly new. From Boss Fight Studio, it’s Red Sonja!

This version of the “She-Devil with a Sword” is officially labeled as the Red Sonja 50th Anniversary EPIC H.A.C.K.S. Red Sonja Action Figure. Quite a mouthful, but the figure was announced two years ago to commemorate 50 years since the character’s debut in Marvel Comics’ Conan the Barbarian #23 back in February of 1973.

The figure finally arrived earlier this year after around an 18-month wait from the preorder, and I think it was worth the wait. Boss Fight must also have high hopes for the license, as they currently have five more figures based on the character up for pre-order. These include a 1/18th scale figure, a 5.5″ figure, and more 1/12 scale figures like this in red & gold deco, black, white, and red deco, and a steampunk pirate version of the character as well.

While I considered picking up the 1/12 scale version of Red Sonja by LooseCollector, which did ship a year or two ago, I ultimately decided to pick up this one that uses the modular Epic H.A.C.K.S. system with 30+ points of articulation. She comes with plenty of accessories to further customize the figure to your liking. These include three different heads, three pairs of hands, two sets of removable armor, an axe, a belt, a knife, a sheath, a sword, and a stand to help with some dynamic posing. Boss Fight also randomly included one of three different pieces of art based on comic cover artwork used by Dynamite Entertainment, which has been publishing the Red Sonja comics for the past 20 years.

The scale is great with other Epic H.A.C.K.S. figures, but she may look a little small when mixed with Mythic Legions or other toy lines that skew closer to a 7″ scale. While the chain mail bikini armor pieces are a bit tricky to keep posed just right, the detail on these and the other accessories is great. The only thing I wish she also included is a wired cape, but I’m sure this would have pushed up the price point and production time even more, so I’ll be on the hunt for a custom cape to make this release “complete.” Overall, I’m still very pleased with this purchase.

Besides Back to the Future being released in US theaters on July 3rd, 1985, this month also marks the 40th anniversary of the Red Sonja film! I’ve seen that same date and a few others attributed to Red Sonja’s theatrical premiere, and while debuting at the same time as BTTF, there are certainly multiple factors as to why that film failed at the box office, but it did become more of a cult classic following its release on cable television and home video.

Regardless of a definitive theatrical release date, I figured this would be the best month to cover the title character’s latest figure here. Also, a new Red Sonja film is finally set to debut in a few weeks. After more than 15 years in development hell and nearly three years since filming, the latest iteration hits theaters on August 15th, 2025.
