Behold, another #TolkienThursday post from the archives. Today, we’re talking about the ToyBiz Lord of the Rings Brego!
I personally like to display this pair with my Fellowship of the Ring display, as it’s an excellent-looking horse and fits well with Arwen, the black riders, and their assorted horses (but ToyBiz did not give Aragorn a horse toy release for the first film). This Deluxe horse and rider set with Aragorn and Brego is from The Two Towers.
In the Lord of the Rings books, Brego did not exist, and Aragorn rode Roheryn (“Horse of the Lady” as this was a gift from Arwen) and later was given Hasufel as a loaner horse from the Rohirrim until Roheryn returned. On a related note, Asfaloth belonged to Glorfindel in the books, but this was changed to being Arwen’s horse for the film, as her character’s role was creatively expanded.
In the extended version of The Two Towers film, Brego was introduced as formerly being owned by the late Prince Theodred and is set to be abandoned in Edoras by the Rohirrim due to his uncontrollable and skittish behavior. Aragorn is able to calm Brego by speaking Elvish to him and sets the horse free, only to be reunited when Brego later finds Aragorn’s unconscious body following a scuffle with Wargs and sort of scoops him up to take him to Helm’s Deep to recover.
If you’re still reading and enjoy new stories in Middle-earth, The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power season 2 is now streaming on Prime Video.
