Recommended music:

Today, from the Bond on Vinyl archives, we’re still listening to music from The Spy Who Loved Me!

Film composer Marvin Hamlisch took over from the usual Bond composer John Barry for The Spy Who Loved Me, while Barry avoided the UK-based soundtrack recording sessions due to tax reasons. This film’s soundtrack leaned more disco-oriented than any previous Bond venture, but Hamlisch still made room for some traditional classical music.

Right around 47 minutes into the film, when Bond and Major Amasova are seemingly stranded in the desert after their van breaks down, a familiar piece of music plays that fits wandering through the desert. Once again, the film editors went to the music of Maurice Jarre with playing the main theme from Lawrence of Arabia. Apparently, the editors played that film’s score over the dailies and decided to leave it in.

For the vinyl album, I once again went to Arthur Fiedler, conducting the Boston Pops for a fantastic compilation of film themes.
