Today, from the Bond on Vinyl archives, we’re listening to music from Moonraker!

In 1979’s Moonraker, James Bond faced off against one of the weakest villains of the film series: Hugo Drax.

Since Drax was really kind of a weenie, it seems he was always found on very lavish sets, including that of a French chateau. Have you ever wondered what the name of the song that Drax played on his Steinway piano was the first time his character meets Bond? It’s Frederic Chopin‘s Prelude No. 15, AKA ‘Raindrop’.

I found the song on this wonderful compilation of classical music on this German album, also released in 1979 by Deutsche Grammophon. Besides Chopin, this album also features Robert Schumann, Beethoven, and Mozart… good stuff! The record does start off with the piano music, Liebestraum, by Franz Liszt from the 1850s, named after the German phrase for “dreams of love.”

This album also contains Claude Debussy’s Clair De Lune, which is featured in Casino Royale (1967).
