Today, from the Bond on Vinyl archives, we’re still listening to music from Moonraker!

Just two minutes after we see a pigeon doing a double-take, Bond is on the case. Then, we get a bit of auditory silliness. A technician entering a secret lab enters by typing his password. When he types in his secret code, each of the five keys plays an audible tone. It just happens to sound like the five-note leitmotif from Close Encounters of the Third Kind. Now I’m not quite sure why you would make a top-secret password play music, but Roger Moore’s Bond peeks over the tech’s shoulder and immediately gains access to the lab:

As the film was being edited in 1979, producer Cubby Albert R. Broccoli called Close Encounters’ director Steven Spielberg, requesting permission to use the theme for a scene in this movie. His request was surprisingly granted as Broccoli rejected Spielberg twice for consideration in directing a Bond film, both after Jaws and Close Encounters.

Five years later, Spielberg contacted Broccoli requesting permission to use 007 theme music for a scene in the new movie he was producing, 1985’s The Goonies. Broccoli pointed out that there were more than five notes in the 007 theme music, but approved, and Spielberg definitely got the better end of the deal with this memorable scene early in the film:

I could have used my copy of the Close Encounters Of The Third Kind (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) by John Williams. Instead, I’ll showcase this alternate album. It features tracks from Star Wars on top. The B side includes a medley of Close Encounters music.
