From the Archives: If You Asked Me To

Today, from the Bond on Vinyl archives, we’re moving ahead a couple years and listening to music from License To Kill!

American composer Michael Kamen took the reins from John Barry (who was recovering from throat surgery) to write the score to 1989’s License to Kill. The theme song was originally supposed to be written and performed by Eric Clapton and Vic Flick. Somehow that tandem didn’t work out, and the job was awarded to Gladys Knight.

Even though R&B music wasn’t really featured in the film or incidental music, producers chose another R&B artist to perform a song for the end credits in Patti LaBelle with ‘If You Asked Me To.’ I suppose the song’s lyrics could represent any number of women in the film (or the Bond franchise, for that matter) with lines of a woman pleading to her significant other, such as: “If you asked me to, I just might change my mind, and let you in my life forever.”

Despite the song reaching the top 10 on the US Billboard R&B charts, the single did not crossover to the pop charts until Celine Dion covered it three years later. Dion’s cover of the song was her first #1 single in Canada and peaked at number #4 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart.

This 12″ single features the original end credits version as well as a dub version and instrumental on the B-side.
