Today, from the Bond on Vinyl archives, we’re still listening to music featured in Goldfinger. We are also enjoying a tune from You Only Live Twice!
In 1905, Annunzio Paolo Mantovani was born in Venice, Italy. Having musical parents, Mantovani learned music theory and piano as a child from his conductor father. At age 14, Mantovani learned the violin, but still used the piano to aid in composing music. He made his debut as a professional violinist at age 16 and joined an orchestra touring Europe.
From the 1930s to the 1950s, he had hits in both the UK and the US. His orchestral albums sold millions even as rock ‘n roll became the popular genre on the singles charts. Mantovani had 27 albums reach the US Top 40 chart and 11 albums make the Top Ten. His most popular albums were themes from various films, including “Film Encores,” which hit #1 in 1957, and “Mantovani Plays Music From ‘Exodus’ and Other Great Themes,” selling over a million copies in 1962.
His 1967 album “Hollywood” collects themes from a dozen Hollywood hits and presents them in an easy listening big band style. This record was released late enough in 1967 to include a beautiful rendition of You Only Live Twice. It also includes, you guessed it, the main theme from Goldfinger as well.😁
