Recommended music:
Today, from the Bond on Vinyl archives, we’re listening to music from Dr. No, From Russia With Love, Goldfinger, Thunderball, and You Only Live Twice!
This 1969 official release from United Artists Records is unique in that it features exactly three tracks from each of the first five Bond soundtracks, played in the order in which the music actually appeared in these films. Aside from Monty Norman receiving credit for conducting Dr. No and the James Bond Theme in From Russia With Love, the rest of the music is credited to John Barry.
The record label and spine use a different title from the compilation album cover, which is written as “The Best Of Bond – Original Soundtracks.”
This UK album was also released in Germany. It was re-released in Saudi Arabia and Yugoslavia. However, it was never sold in the United States. Despite UA’s interesting strategy for distributing the album, I would say the strangest thing about it is the album art.
The front and back covers both feature still photographs from the five EON-produced Bond films at the time. It also includes a seemingly topless woman. She fancies it up with a slim cigarette, a man’s watch (possibly Bond’s), and a top hat (possibly Oddjob’s).
