From the Archives: The Movie Hits Of The 80’s

Today, from the Bond on Vinyl archives, we’re moving on to the 1980s and listening to music from A View To A Kill!

The 2020 worldwide pandemic certainly made it easier for people to catch up on things at home if they happened to be quarantining from others and wanted to catch up on projects or hobbies. For a handful of specific Swedish musicians, it gave them an opportunity to both get caught up on and re-watch some favorite films of the 1980s. They also used the at-home time to collaborate with one another by online video chats, then combined these two areas to form a supergroup called At the Movies.

The group, which includes vocalists Bjorn “Speed” Strid, Chris Laney, drummer Allan Sørensen, keyboard player Morten Sandager, bass player Pontus Egberg (from King Diamond), and guitarist Pontus Norgren (yes, that is two Pontus’ out of the original six band members).

Their first online collaboration was to cover Robert Tepper’s “No Easy Way Out” from Rocky IV. The song was a considerable success, and by the end of 2020, the band had enough material for an entire album of 1980s soundtrack hits from “St. Elmo’s Fire” to “The Time Of My Life” (from Dirty Dancing) to “The Neverending Story.”

Fortunately, the album came across my radar as it also includes the title song from the 1985 Bond film ‘A View to a Kill.’ (My copy is not the original from Sweden, but is a German reissue on a cool, clear vinyl). Though the cover track is similar to the Duran Duran original, the style is slightly more rock than pop, and the results are great!
