From the Archives: The Movie Hits Of The 80’s

Today, from the Bond on Vinyl archives, we’re moving on to the 1980s and listening to music from A View To A Kill!

The 2020 pandemic made it easier for people to work from home and catch up on projects or hobbies while isolating from others. For a handful of Swedish musicians, it allowed them to both catch up on and rewatch some favorite 1980s films. They also used their at-home time to collaborate via online video chats, then combined the two areas to form a supergroup called At the Movies.

The group, which includes vocalists Bjorn “Speed” Strid, Chris Laney, drummer Allan Sørensen, keyboard player Morten Sandager, bass player Pontus Egberg (from King Diamond), and guitarist Pontus Norgren (yes, that is two Pontus’ out of the original six band members).

Their first online collaboration was to cover Robert Tepper’s “No Easy Way Out” from Rocky IV. The song was a considerable success, and by the end of 2020, the band had enough material for an entire album of 1980s soundtrack hits from “St. Elmo’s Fire” to “The Time Of My Life” (from Dirty Dancing) to “The Neverending Story.”

Fortunately, the album came to my attention because it includes the title song from the 1985 Bond film ‘A View to a Kill.’ (My copy is not the original from Sweden, but a German reissue on cool, clear vinyl.) Although the cover track is similar to the Duran Duran original, the style is slightly rockier than pop, and the results are fantastic!
