Recommended music: Sabaton – Man of War
Happy Monday, MOTU fans! For this #MastersMonday, we’re taking another look at the Revolution figures from the Mattel Masters of the Universe Masterverse line. Tonight, let’s check out the penultimate figure in this series: Man-Of-War!
Duncan, better known as Man-At-Arms, has been integral to the Masters of the Universe franchise since 1982. He appeared in the initial wave of the original toy line and in the first minicomic alongside He-Man. The character’s importance to the story has continued throughout the Netflix animated series, in which he appears in every episode of Masters of the Universe: Revelation and Revolution. In Revolution, Andra assumes the role of Man-At-Arms, while Duncan now acts as an advisor. Still, he keeps tinkering and makes an invention that absolutely wrecks Hordak’s mothership on its own.
Duncan was part of the second wave of Masters of the Universe: Revelation figures and got a Deluxe release two years later, though it didn’t sell well. Mattel seemed unsure about releasing another Man-At-Arms, but the Man-Of-War figure was finally revealed in July 2024, a year after the first Revolution figures were shown at San Diego Comic-Con. It was in stock by August and shipped with the rest of Masterverse wave 14, but this was seven months after the Revolution series started on Netflix in January 2024.
The sculpt and paint closely resemble the animated character, featuring Duncan in new pearlescent white armor rather than his traditional orange and green. The figure includes a built-in blaster with a blast effect, a face shield, a detachable gauntlet, an additional pair of hands, and an updated mace attachment. Unfortunately, the mace doesn’t change into other modes like in the show, and the figure lacks both the remote grenades and Duncan’s whip.
Overall, I’m glad this figure was included in the line since Duncan played a big part in the Revelation series. I just wish he had gotten another deluxe release with his military funeral look and a few more accessories.
Masters of the Universe Revelation/Revolution turned four years old this year! I “figure” there’ll be a new figure from this series to share here for the rest of the year!
