Oogie Boogie

Recommended music: Ken Page, Ed Ivory – Oogie Boogie’s Song

For our last #WhateverWednesday of the year, let’s take a look at an action figure that fits right in with the night before Christmas. Today’s pick from the Super7 ReAction The Nightmare Before Christmas line is Oogie Boogie!

In The Nightmare Before Christmas, Oogie Boogie is voiced by Ken Page. The actor and cabaret singer continued playing the character in Kingdom Hearts and several other video games until his passing last year. Page’s performance lends significant gravitas to the primary antagonist of Jack Skellington, as the character is filled with nasty thoughts, creepiness, and malevolence, all contained within a bug-filled sack.

Funko first included Oogie Boogie in its Nightmare Before Christmas ReAction line in 2016, and Super7 brought him back for the last wave of NBC ReAction figures in 2022. The figure is highly detailed for its 1/18th scale and features the usual five points of articulation: swiveling head, shoulders, and hips. While the Funko version came with Sally’s detached leg as an accessory from a specific scene, the Super7 version gives Oogie a pair of dice sculpted into his hand and a single bug. More accessories would have been nice, but the dice are probably too small to include separately. The bug is painted in a bright color to match Oogie Boogie’s black lit underground lair, and I appreciate that his body is painted in the regular color of his brownish-gray burlap sack body rather than the bright green from the black light scenes, which is typical in other Oogie Boogie action figures and NBC merchandise. That said, I still used green lighting for this shot. 😄
