Deacon

Recommended music: Deacon Blue – Christmas & Glasgow

For our last #FourHorsemenFriday post of the year, let’s check out the Four Horsemen Studios Mythic Legions Deacon!

The Mythic Legions All Stars 6 wave brought in new accessories, knights, skeletons, and the biggest addition—a new horse. Like the previous equine releases in the line, Deacon received a fully fleshed-out backstory. The best horses in Eathyross belong to the Templar Emissaries and take part in a ceremony at the Temple of Eathyron before serving, where they get the Golden Eagle’s blessing for protection on their missions. Deacon, who belongs to Sir Enoch, is known as the fastest and bravest of the Emissaries’ horses and stands as a symbol of hope for the Order of Eathyron.

Though we already received some new Mythic Legions horses earlier this year with Bishop and Conabus in the Necronimus wave, Deacon really stands out from them in the display. Bishop introduced a soft-goods overlay onto horses in the line, and Deacon took it to the next level. While third-party customizers have been making these soft-goods covers for a few years, this was the first time we received them directly from the factory upon release. The Four Horsemen were very upfront about the news that, once the soft goods are removed, this horse is essentially a repack of Balius, with the same excellent sculpt, articulation, and paint job. Side by side, they do look like the same brown horse, but I’ll definitely be keeping Deacon displayed with all the bells and whistles.

This is the first Mythic Legions horse where I opened more than one right away to try out different display options. The head and neck armor look like the ones that came with Conabus, but you can swap them for classic mane and forelock pieces. There is also an option for a sculpted plastic or cloth saddle blanket. The figure also comes with a simple sword and shield, even though Sir Enoch already has plenty of weapons. The standout accessory is the long pike with a banner. I have sculpted banners from the original Templar Knights from 2016, but the new soft-goods banner matches Deacon’s cloth details and has a wire for better posing.

Overall, Deacon is an excellent figure and was well worth the wait since the 2023 pre-order. I’m fine with The Four Horsemen switching the Templar emblem on Deacon’s soft-goods to the Order of Eathyron logo. This horse fits perfectly in the world of Mythoss, and the history of large crosses on horse blankets doesn’t affect how I display him. If you need a good horse for your 1/12 scale figures, go for Bailus or Boreus. If you want a great one, get Deacon!
