Happy Monday, MOTU fans! I hope you had a great weekend. To start another year of #MastersMonday, let’s highlight some 1985 releases from the vintage Mattel Masters of the Universe line. Today, we’re checking out Dragon Blaster Skeletor!
This deluxe version of Skeletor was the second variant of the character in the vintage line and came on an oversized card. Mattel had planned another variant of Skeletor, called “Smoke and Chains,” but its action feature was deemed too flammable for a kids’ toy. Like Kobra Khan, who had a chest reservoir and squirting head, this Skeletor came with a squirting backpack gimmick that “stops enemies cold with his paralyzing jet of venom!” You could technically attach the dragon to other figures with the same torso size, but it looked even sillier since the dragon was meant to be Skeletor’s pet.
The figure included a mini-comic titled “Skeletor’s Dragon,” featuring fun artwork, including Skeletor riding Battle Bones. As a kid, I loved this figure for its squirt gun action and the real metal chains that connected a small padlock to Skeletor’s wrist. Unfortunately, these accessories have gone missing from my figure. However, this issue was addressed in the Masters of the Universe Classics line for DB Skeletor, where the chain was designed to be non-removable.
I also thought the paint job on the face and body was better than the original, and the power sword was a bit darker purple. Overall, it’s a cool figure with a fun and memorable action feature.
