George R.R. Martin

For this first full #FunkoFriday (how’s that for alliteration?), we won’t be talking about articulation or paint application, but we will be taking a look at the Funko Pop! Icons George R.R. Martin!

George R.R. Martin is an American novelist and short-story writer in the fantasy, horror, and science fiction genres, a screenwriter, and a television producer. He is best known for his epic fantasy series, A Song of Ice and Fire, which had its fifth book, A Dance with Dragons, released way back in 2011. The next book in the series, The Winds of Winter, has been in the works since 2010 and may never be completed, as Martin’s career completely changed over the past 15 years since his ASOIAF series was adapted into the HBO mega-hit Game of Thrones.

The TV series ‘A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms,’ based on Martin’s Tales of Dunk and Egg novellas, premieres this Sunday on HBO. This prequel to Game of Thrones is the third TV series in Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire franchise.

Though the graphic on the back of the packaging nods to Game of Thrones, this vinyl figure was actually the number one in Funko’s Icons line, which depicts both real and fictional people, living or dead, throughout history. The line started in 2018 and still continues today. This figure was a Barnes & Noble exclusive at the time, but later that year, it was also included in a The Game of Thrones “The Creators” 3-Pack Funko Pop! vinyl, which also featured Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss. This set was released exclusively for the New York Comic Con (NYCC) and other Fall 2018 Conventions.

No, the flames in this photo aren’t from a dragon, but this tiny Mr. Martin joined me this week as we passed through Denver International Airport, and for some reason, there are now outdoor firepits in every terminal. 😄
