Beauregard

Recommended music: George Formby – When I’m Cleaning Windows (from “Keep Your Seats Please”)

It’s #SomethingElseSunday, and we’re still celebrating 70 years of the Muppets! Today, from the Palisades Toys Muppets line, it’s Beauregard!

George the Janitor first appeared as The Muppet Theatre custodian in the 1974 pilot, “The Muppets Valentine Show.” He returned the following year and was present in every episode of The Muppet Show’s first season. By season two, George was relegated to a background character, appearing in only four episodes. For the final three seasons, he was featured only in the show’s opening sequence, as Beauregard replaced him as the theatre’s backstage janitor.

On The Muppet Show, Beauregard occasionally served as a stagehand, sometimes assisted by Beaker, in addition to his janitorial responsibilities. He appeared in a variety of sketches, including Veterinarian’s Hospital, and was featured in 51 episodes during the final three seasons.

After The Muppet Show, Beauregard appeared in dozens of Muppet films, television specials, and series episodes. In addition to his performances as Gonzo, Dr. Bunsen Honeydew, and Waldorf over the past five decades, Dave Goelz has portrayed Beauregard since the character’s 1978 debut.

As one of the earliest pieces of Beauregard merchandise, the character was included in wave seven of the Palisades Toys line. The figure features detailed sculpting and 14 points of articulation. In addition to the hat held in place by a magnet, Beauregard comes with some of my favorite action figure accessories, including a broom, a mop, and a dirty mop bucket with a wringer. Overall, it’s a great release for longtime Muppet fans and action figure collectors seeking unique accessories.

Yes, I know the 70th anniversary of The Muppets has passed, but I still have a bunch of characters to cover on the blog.
