Recommended video: John Williams – The Departure
Everyone ready to phone home on this frigid #FunkoFriday? Today, instead of focusing on articulation or paint details, let’s check out the Funko Pop! Vinyl E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial #130!
E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial came out in 1982 and quickly became a classic. The film blended science fiction with real emotion, making it a cultural phenomenon. It helped make Steven Spielberg a household name, highlighted themes of childhood, empathy, and friendship, and broke box-office records, becoming the highest-grossing movie of its time.
The film was also a major success at the Academy Awards, earning nine nominations, including Best Picture and Best Director for Spielberg. It won four Oscars: Best Original Score for John Williams, Best Visual Effects, Best Sound, and Best Sound Effects Editing. Along with its box office and critical success, the film inspired a wide range of toys and other tie-in merchandise.
Along with the original LJN toy line, the 1980s saw some unusual E.T. products, like a life-size E.T. “roommate valet hamper,” light-up fingers, and the infamous video game that wrecked Atari’s market dominance and contributed to the video game crash of 1983.
Pacific Playthings, which was part of Toys “R” Us, released a special action figure set for the film’s 20th anniversary. NECA Toys followed up with more E.T. toys for the 30th and 40th anniversaries. Funko joined in, too, releasing about a dozen Pop! vinyl figures, including this one for the 40th anniversary.
