Hi everyone! It’s #TurtleTuesday, and I’m excited to share that this is my 100th blog post about Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles toys in my collection. Today, I want to talk about the NECA Toys Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Rock Soldier.
In the fourth episode of the 1987 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles cartoon, called “Hot Rodding Teenagers from Dimension X,” we got to see more of the TMNT universe beyond New York City. Krang seeks to invade Earth with an army of sentient humanoids known as Rock Warriors, Stone Warriors, or just Rock Soldiers, who are literally made of rocks. General Traag had some scenes with Krang and Shredder, but the Rock Soldiers actually appeared about six more times than Traag, showing up in 17 episodes throughout the series.
General Traag got an action figure in the old Playmates toyline, and Rock Soldiers showed up in Archie comics, Italian comics, IDW comics, UK comics and comic strips, several video games, and both the 1987 and 2012 cartoons. Still, they never had an action figure until this NECA release. The design and paint job look just like the soldiers from the 1987 cartoon, and the figure has enough articulation for lots of military poses.
The Rock Soldier was released in a two-pack with a member of the Crooked Ninja Turtle Gang in 2022. It comes with extra hands for fists, open hands, and trigger poses, plus several accessories just for the Rock Soldier, like a mutagen canister, a pistol, two rifles, and a weather bomb. Overall, it’s a great set for army-building or for fans who want some villains to face off against the turtles on their shelves.
