The Gate Keeper

“There is no Dana. There is only Zuul.”

It’s #FunkoFriday, so let’s have some fun. Today, I’m skipping the usual talk about articulation or paint details and checking out the Funko Pop! Vinyl Ghostbusters The Gate Keeper!

In the 1984 classic Ghostbusters, Dana Barrett (played by Sigourney Weaver) becomes the Gatekeeper when she is possessed by Zuul, a loyal minion of the shape-shifting god, Gozer, as a sign of the coming apocalypse. The Gatekeeper’s main job is to find and join with the Keymaster (Louis Tully’s possessed form—see last week’s post) to open the portal on top of 550 Central Park West. Weaver’s performance stands out as she shifts from a calm cellist to a fierce, gravel-voiced figure with supernatural strength.

Four years after Mattel released their Ghostbusters Zuul “Gatekeeper of Gozer” figure, and before Diamond Select and Hasbro made their own Dana Barrett figures, Funko released this version. The figure does a great job showing Dana’s wild hair and dramatic makeup from her scenes as The Gate Keeper. It came in a Walmart exclusive 3-pack with The Key Master and Zuul.
