A Battle Royal featuring He-Man Puzzle

Recommended music: 3 Doors Down – Loser

Happy Monday! For this #MastersMonday and every Monday in February, let’s look at some fun vintage Masters of the Universe games and collectibles from 1983. Today, I’m highlighting the Golden Masters of the Universe Jigsaw Puzzle: A Battle Royal featuring He-Man!

Yes, it really is “Royal,” not “Royale.” This great collage showcases many characters from the early Masters of the Universe toyline. You’ll spot a Filmation-style Orko casting magic on Faker, Teela attempting to mow down Evil-Lyn with an Attak Trak, and Man-E-Faces protecting Castle Grayskull from Zodac, the Cosmic Enforcer.

Though I’ve never seen it verified anywhere, I think William George can be credited for the artwork on this puzzle. He did the memorable packaging art for many toys in the original Mattel toy line, and the way the characters and vehicles are drawn here matches his style.

This Golden puzzle came out in 1983 [sorry, I jumped ahead last week] and was much bigger than usual. Instead of the standard 63- or 100-piece set, this one had 300 extra-large pieces and measured 22.5 by 33 inches. The detailed artwork really stands out in this bigger size. Fun stuff!
