Crossbow Uruk-Hai (Custom)

Recommended music: 3 Doors Down – Away From The Sun

It’s #TolkienThursday, and today, we’re finding ourselves so far down and away from the sun, further into the Battle of Helm’s Deep from The Two Towers, and taking a look at another ToyBiz Lord of the Rings Crossbow Uruk-Hai!

The Battle of Helm’s Deep marks the height of Saruman’s assault on the Rohirrim. His force of 10,000 Uruk-hai, the toughest orcs, includes Berserkers, Pikemen, Sappers, Scouts, and Swordsmen. But it’s the Crossbowmen who attack first for the White Hand.

The Crossbow Uruk-Hai, advertised as “with Real Crossbow Firing Action,” came out in the first wave of carded figures for The Two Towers. It was a great army builder and soon returned, repacked for the first half-moon series wave for Return of the King.

If you read last week’s post, you probably already knew all that. This figure has more armor than earlier orc releases, and its articulation lets it hold more than just the crossbow, but I gave this particular orc a bit of a new paint job. I started painting orcs about 15 years ago because I noticed the toys weren’t as dark as the flesh tones in the film. It’s hardly a custom figure—more of a simple helmet swap—and changing the crossbow out for a weapon from another toy line gives it a new look and adds some variety to your Battle of Helm’s Deep display. Bonus points for you if you recognize the spear.
