Zuul

Recommended video: Elmer Bernstein – Zuul (Album Version)

It’s #FunkoFriday again, so let’s have some fun. Today, I’m going to skip the usual talk about articulation or paint details and focus on the Funko Pop! Vinyl Ghostbusters Zuul!

In the classic Ghostbusters film, Zuul is the powerful “Gatekeeper of Gozer” and a demigod who serves the Destructor. Zuul usually appears as a scary, red-eyed Terror Dog with jagged horns and a snarling face.

During the 1984 Manhattan cross-dimensional breach, Zuul took over Dana Barrett [see last week’s post], turning her into a sultry character while she waited for the “Keymaster,” Vinz Clortho. Their meeting was needed to open the interdimensional door at 550 Central Park West. Zuul is both menacing and memorable, delivering one of the franchise’s best lines through the possessed Sigourney Weaver, “There is no Dana, only Zuul.”

Years after NECA Toys released Ghostbusters Terror Dog figures (both Zuul and Vinz Clortho), but before Diamond Select and Hasbro made their own, Funko put out this version labeled as Zuul. I like that they changed the usual black eyes for red ones, since Zuul has red eyes a few times in the movie. This figure came in a Walmart-exclusive 3-pack with The Gate Keeper and The Key Master, and it’s appropriately larger than the other two figures in the set.
