AT-AT Driver

Recommended music: Primus – Jerry Was A Race Car Driver

Maybe Jerry took the controls of an AT-AT for #StarWarsSaturday. Today, we’re driving over the icy plains of Hoth during The Empire Strikes Back. From the Hasbro Star Wars The Vintage Collection, it’s the AT-AT Driver!

In The Empire Strikes Back, the All-Terrain Armored Transport (AT-AT) had a big impact on how non-space battles look in a galaxy far, far away. These massive, four-legged machines showed up for the first time in the Battle of Hoth as the Empire’s moving fortresses, each standing over 20 meters tall.

These walkers are known not only for their powerful laser cannons, but also for the fear they inspired. The steady, metallic sound as they approached meant trouble for the Rebel Alliance. Each AT-AT is controlled by a team, including two drivers.

Kenner released the first 3.75-inch AT-AT Driver figure in 1980. Hasbro released a new version of their Power of the Force 2 AT-AT in 1997. More versions were released in The Saga Collection and The Legacy Collection, and in 2010, a new Driver was included with the Toys’R’Us-exclusive Vintage Collection AT-AT. This latest Driver looks like a repaint of the TSC version, but it doesn’t have the year marked on the leg or foot. It also doesn’t come with a blaster or a stand. Even though it’s missing wrist and ankle joints, it still fits in the AT-AT cockpit. The gray color is lighter than before, and the bright white stands out against the other dull colors in the Walker.

The Empire Strikes Back turned 45 last May! I “figure” there will be a new Episode V figure to share here for the rest of the anniversary year. Happy 45 years and counting to TESB!
