Rocksteady (in pre-mutated human form)

Recommended music: Disturbed – Stupify

It’s #TurtleTuesday, and I’ve now shared 99 posts about TMNT toys from my collection. Today, I’m excited to share yet another NECA Toys Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Rocksteady!

In the opening scene of the first episode of the 1987 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles cartoon, “Turtle Tracks,” a gang of street punks is shown causing mayhem to establish just how bad crime has gotten in New York City. In the next episode, “Enter the Shredder,” Shredder recruits this street gang and mutates some of them with animals stolen from the zoo to give them powers stronger than the Turtles. Bebop and his friend Rocksteady become a warthog and a rhino, but they never quite match the Turtles’ skills. Rocksteady was played by Cam Clarke, who also provided the voice of Leonardo for the 1987 series, as well as Prince Adam/He-Man in the 2002 version of He-Man and the Masters of the Universe series.

NECA included this pre-mutated human form of Rocksteady in the ‘Premonition of a Premutation’ SDCC exclusive four-pack in 2022. The set also included human versions of Bebop, Hamato Yoshi, and Baxter Stockman, who made his action figure debut. Rocksteady reuses many parts from the Burne figure, which makes him look short and have limited articulation. His elbows have a single joint with a painted-on elbow. Other than a slightly big head and a second sculpted belt, he looks a lot like the character from the first two episodes. He comes with three hand types: gripping, open, and fists. For accessories, Rocksteady gets a baseball bat, a non-baseball club, a boom box, a crowbar, and a can of spray paint. If you collect the cartoon line, you might think about skipping this set, but I believe all four figures are must-haves.
