Don’t look shocked this #TurtleTuesday. Today, we’re checking out the NECA Toys Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Shell Shock Turtle!
Getting zapped with high voltage is often portrayed humorously in movies and video games. Think of the Emperor zapping Darth Vader in Return of the Jedi or Marv getting electrocuted in Home Alone 2—seeing a glowing skeleton can be surprisingly funny. The creators of the 1991 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Turtles in Time arcade game and its SNES port, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles IV: Turtles in Time, clearly thought so too.
In the game, when the turtles get hit by an energy blast, they light up in the same way. NECA turned this look into an action figure for their TMNT video game series. The Glow-in-the-Dark figure was included in an arcade-themed mystery box from Loot Crate in 2020.
This was probably one of their best boxes. It also came with a gold token, a long-sleeve shirt, pixelated pins of Krang and a pizza, a Sewer Surfin’ spinning keychain, a TV for the turtles’ den with a lenticular screen, and some word bubble stickers.
The paint job is simple, but it works as a stand-in for any of the Turtle characters. The figure doesn’t come with weapons, but you do get an extra set of flat hands to swap with the weapon-holding ones, even though there’s nothing for them to hold. In the end, it’s a fun release and a great addition to your TMNT video game display.
