Yesterday, my calendar reminded me that The One Ring was destroyed. So for this #TolkienThursday, let’s pause the toy talk and check out the 1981 J.R.R. Tolkien The Lord of the Rings Calendar!

In 1981, Tolkien Enterprises released several J.R.R. Tolkien calendars. This particular Lord of the Rings calendar highlights “To Honor the Silver Anniversary,” which likely refers to the 25th anniversary of the publication of Return of the King in the US.

Each month features illustrations by Paul Rivoche, inspired by the 1978 animated Lord of the Rings film. The calendar is fun because it marks events from the books instead of the usual holidays. You might think the One Ring was destroyed on March 25th, but it actually happened on the 25th of Rethe, the third month of the Shire Calendar, which matches up with modern dates from February 21 to March 22.😄

The 1981 calendar lines up perfectly with 2026, so I get to use it all year. I’ll try to share more about this as the year goes on.
