On this #TurtleTuesday, “I know your anger, and I know your dreams.” Today, we’re taking a look at the NECA Toys Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Shredder!
In the 1990 film, Shredder (Oroku Saki) stands out from the more over-the-top or clumsy versions of the character in comics and cartoons. Here, he acts like a cult leader, taking advantage of troubled teens in New York City and bringing them into the Foot Clan. By giving these “lost” kids a sense of belonging, he builds an army of thieves and assassins who are fiercely loyal and drawn to a life of excess.
His role is grounded in a classic revenge tragedy, rooted in a blood feud with Hamato Yoshi. He is a lethal martial arts master whose presence is defined by silence and sharp steel, serving as a dark mirror to Splinter; while Splinter fosters growth through discipline and love, Shredder demands obedience through fear and greed. This Shredder is the embodiment of the city’s shadows—a cold, predatory force that forces the Turtles to grow up.
NECA first released this 1990 movie Shredder in a San Diego Comic Con 2019 exclusive set called ‘The Capture of Splinter.’ The set came with Splinter, two Foot soldiers, and lots of accessories, such as a cardboard crate, manacles for Splinter, and a weapons rack. They also made an 18-inch Shredder that year, but this 7-inch version was later sold on its own as a Gamestop exclusive in 2020 and also in a two-pack with Splinter.
This figure captures the detailed look of Shredder as played by James Saito, and you can even remove the mask to see his scarred face. It comes with his wild cloth cape and has 30 points of articulation to complete the accuracy of his poses in the film. The set also includes three sets of hands, a pointy pole weapon, and his sneaky knife with a holster.
Overall, this figure is a great value for the price, and a must-have if you want a complete display from the 1990 TMNT movie.
