Happy Monday, MOTU fans! I hope you had a great weekend. I spent most of my time packing up toys and other items from my collection to get ready for a move, so it probably wasn’t as exciting as yours. For this #MastersMonday, let’s take a look at another 1985 release from the vintage Mattel Masters of the Universe line: Roboto!
Today, I want to talk about another one of my favorite Heroic Warriors from when I was a kid. The “Heroic mechanical warrior” was released in early 1985 and featured a 100% new sculpt. His bold, futuristic look stood out with purple and silver complementing the primary reds and blue, and his clear plastic torso let you see the gears move when you twisted his waist. He also came with three interchangeable weapon hands, so you could pick between an axe, a laser cannon, or a robotic claw.
What really made me love Roboto was reading his included minicomic again and again. “The Battle of Roboto” tells the backstory of how Man-At-Arms built him and gave him a cybernetic heart so he could feel human emotions.
Roboto also showed up in the original Filmation He-Man and the Masters of the Universe cartoon, in the season two episode ‘Happy Birthday Roboto.’ In this version, his origin was different—he was a space explorer from the planet Robotica. After his ship crashed on Eternia, he was badly damaged until Man-At-Arms fixed him up.
Roboto was in many episodes of the 2002 Mike Young Productions He-Man cartoon, where he joined the main group of Heroic Warriors. He also came back for a few episodes in the Netflix Masters of the Universe: Revelation series.
All in all, Roboto stands out, and the vintage toy remains a favorite among many fans.
