It’s #FunkoFriday, so let’s have fun! Today, rather than discussing articulation or paint, we’re focusing on the Funko Pop! Vinyl Star Wars – The Empire Strikes Back Wampa #39!
The Wampa stands over two meters tall and is the apex predator on the frozen ice planet of Hoth. Its thick white fur keeps it warm and helps it blend in with the snowy landscape, making it a stealthy hunter.
Wampas usually ambush their prey, stun them, and drag them back to their ice caves. They hang their meals from the ceiling using frozen water to stick them in place. This way, the Wampa keeps its food fresh while it rests. With all this in mind, it’s clear why Luke and his tauntaun didn’t stand a chance.
Funko released this Super-Sized 6″ Wampa bobblehead in 2014. The following year, this Wampa was released as a Hot Topic exclusive with a flocked, fuzzy texture. One more version was released in a San Diego Comic-Con exclusive 2-pack with Luke Skywalker. This Wampa is also flocked and features blood around its mouth from the scene where it eats the Tauntaun.
For the 40th anniversary of The Empire Strikes Back, they brought out the Battle at Echo Base: Wampa version. In that one, the Wampa holds a bone and reaches out with its other hand. It also has messier hair and a fiercer look. It’s a cool figure, but it feels very different from this cuter, square-headed version.
