On this #TurtleTuesday, we’re looking at another NECA Toys Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Shredder!
In the 1989 Konami classic Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Arcade Game, Shredder is the main villain and the last challenge of the game. He’s the one who kidnaps April O’Neil and Master Splinter, giving the Turtles a reason to battle from the New York sewers all the way to the Technodrome.
Shredder first shows up at the end of the first level, right after you beat Rocksteady. He kidnaps April O’Neil and gets away. He returns for a cutscene, guarding April with Bebop and Rocksteady (or Baxter Stockman in the NES version). In the third level, he pops up on monitors and says, “Tonight I dine on turtle soup.”
As the final boss, Shredder appears at the end of the Technodrome level, right after you fight Krang. He attacks with his sword and shoots mutagen beam lightning bolts from his helmet that can instantly de-mutate the Turtles, causing them to lose a life, or another quarter to the arcade. He can also make clones of himself, one more than the number of Turtles fighting him in the arcade version. When Shredder or a clone is almost beaten, his helmet falls off. This fight is known for being much harder than the rest of the game. Like in the Saturday-morning cartoon, his defeat isn’t the end. He escapes to Dimension X, setting things up for a sequel.
NECA made a version of Oroku Saki based on his look from the game for the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (Arcade Appearance) Foot Clan Box Set. This four-pack was a San Diego Comic-Con exclusive in 2016 and came in packaging that looks like the arcade game’s marquee and control panel. Along with three different colored Foot Soldiers and their weapons, Shredder comes with extra hands and his katana. They didn’t include his lightning effects, but overall, it’s a great set. If you’re a fan of the TMNT games, I highly recommend picking this one up.
