For this #StarWarsSaturday, we’re back in Echo Base on Hoth during The Empire Strikes Back. From the Hasbro Star Wars: Power of the Jedi line, it’s another K-3PO!
K-3PO, the protocol droid with a stark white finish, played an important role for the Rebel Alliance. He was stationed at Echo Base on Hoth, where he helped coordinate communications for Rebel leaders and assisted General Rieekan with defense strategies and base operations. During the Battle of Hoth, K-3PO stayed at his post in the command center until the ceiling collapsed during the Imperial attack. He was destroyed during the evacuation, which was a quiet but meaningful loss for the Rebellion’s administrative team.
This was the K-3PO action figure, included in Hasbro’s Power of the Jedi line in 2008. I’ve already talked about the later Legacy Collection and Shadow of the Darkside versions, but this first one stands out. The figure only has five points of articulation, which feels simple now, but it fits a protocol droid that doesn’t move much in the movie. He came with one accessory, a stentronic sensor pack for detecting intruders, though I’m not sure why a droid would be given that job.
What makes this K-3PO figure different from the others is the blast marks on its chest, which show its final scene after the Battle of Hoth, when the droid is seen lifeless in the rubble of Echo Base. The later releases are better for an Echo Base diorama, but this one is still worth getting if you have room in your display and want the unique accessory.
The Empire Strikes Back turned 45 last May! I “figure” I’ve got just a couple more Episode V figures to share here during the anniversary year. Happy 45 years and counting to TESB!
