From the Archives: High Aldwin (Heroic Wise Man)

Also, today from the archives, let’s celebrate the Magic of Willow with this Tonka figure of High Aldwin (Heroic Wise Man)!

This figure represents just the second figure of a film character played by Hollywood legend Billy Barty, following his Masters of the Universe character Gwildor, who received a figure the year before.

Barty had a film and television career spanning over seven decades including such films as Soup to Nuts, Bride of Frankenstein, multiple television shows produced by Sid and Marty Krofft, 1978’s animated Lord of the Rings (as the rotoscope reference for Bilbo), Legend, the voice of Figment at EPCOT, and Masters of the Universe (my personal favorite) … quite an extensive list by the time Willow was being cast.

Following Willow, Barty later starred in UHF, Radioland Murders, and The Rescuers Down Under, among other films.

Bigger than just acting, Barty also founded the Little People of America organization to help people with dwarfism. The group is still going strong 65+ years later. By 1981, Barty had already received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for his contributions to the film industry.

The Willow film turns 37 years old next week. I figure there’ll be a new Willow item from my collection to share here for the rest of the month. Happy 37 years to the Magic of Willow!

Webstor

Recommended music: Janet Jackson – Escapade

Well, it’s #MastersMonday, and we’ve got another 1984 figure from the vintage Mattel Masters of the Universe toy line: it’s Webstor!

Webstor was a character that showed up during the second season of the Filmation He-Man and the Masters of the Universe animated series, as well as a few episodes of She-Ra Princess of Power. The “Evil Master of Escape” played one of Skeletor’s more annoying minions, in my opinion, and just wasn’t as cool as other 1980s icons, Spider-Man, or the TV character Webster.

I do remember getting this figure for a birthday a few years into the line and being underwhelmed there as well. He is the only figure in the original MOTU toyline whose armor was off in the package, which was just wrapped up off to the side of the figure. Even with this more naked look on the card, he still didn’t look like a spider to me, and the black widow logo on his armor didn’t help to connect the dots.

While he came with an orange version of the Castle Grayskull rifle and a grappling hook repurposed from the Big Jim line, youthful me could never figure out how to make his backpack work, which contained a line that he was supposed to effortlessly climb up. I am glad I had the figure so He-Man could have another in-universe baddie to tussle with. However, Webstor will likely always rank towards the bottom of my list of favorite MOTU characters.

From the Archives: Revelation Teela 2.0

Recommended music: Bear McCreary – Teela Joins the Wild Hunt

Another #MastersMonday post from the archives is here. Today, we’ve got the Mattel Masters of the Universe: Revelation Masterverse Teela!

This figure is based on Teela’s somewhat familiar design from the first episode of Masters of the Universe: Revelation. The thing I appreciate about this “2.0” figure is that Mattel included this alternate head for the character when she rejects the role of Man-at-Arms and walks away from leading the royal guard after feeling betrayed following the “death” of a certain most powerful man in the universe.😁👍

Masters Of The Universe: Revolution may no longer be a top animated series on Netflix, but that doesn’t mean I will stop talking about it anytime soon. Also, I think the Blu-ray comes out tomorrow!

From the Archives: Revelation Tri-Klops

Recommended music: Rollins Band – Liar

Today on #MastersMonday from the archives, we’ve got the Mattel Masters of the Universe: Revelation Tri-Klops!

This deluxe version of Tri-Klops is based on his design from Masters Of The Universe Revelation. Seeing a very original spin on this character leading a technology-based cult was a fun surprise in the series, and the voice acting by Henry Rollins felt like a good fit.

A bonus for this figure is that you can remove the soft goods if you prefer a traditional-looking Tri-Klops.

Masters Of The Universe: Revolution may no longer be a top animated series on Netflix. However, I’m not going to stop talking about it anytime soon.

Girls of Grayskull

Recommended music: Mötley Crüe – Girls Girls Girls

On this #SomethingElseSunday, we’ve got another Masters of the Universe collaboration with Eternian Epic Imagery. For our “MOTU Girls” theme, my contribution is based on artwork by Tim Seely: Girls of Grayskull!

Masters of the Universe and Princess of Power have created some iconic female characters who all play an integral part in the storytelling in the MOTU universe. Led by Teela, Evil-Lyn, She-Ra, and many others, they have been a huge part of our childhood and remain our very own leading ladies.

Eternian Epic imagery has showcased some of these amazing female leads in their depiction of MOTU Girls

Prince Adam

Recommended music: Adam Ant – Goody Two Shoes

Powering up this #MastersMonday, we’ve got another familiar 1984 figure from the vintage Mattel Masters of the Universe toy line: it’s Prince Adam!

While Adam was a very familiar character to me as a child, playing a huge role as He-Man’s “heroic secret identity” daily on the Filmation He-Man and the Masters of the Universe animated series, the figure never really appealed to me as a kid. Why, oh why, did he have a maroon vest, lavender pants, and a pink sword? That doesn’t match Prince Adam or He-Man.

Perhaps this was due to the cartoon version undergoing somewhat of a color transformation when becoming He-Man, both in shades of clothing and skin tone, that made him seem like two separate characters. To youthful me, this figure was a weird white repaint, with a fabric tunic and belt that I would certainly lose or get dirty. After all, if I really needed Prince Adam for my toy adventures, I could achieve what I needed by simply removing He-Man’s armor (except Battle Armor He-Man, with his armored torso).

As an adult MOTU fan and collector, I have grown to appreciate the Prince Adam character much more, and I have since purchased not just this vintage version but many other variations over the years.😁👍

From the Archives: Revelation Andra

Recommended music: Andrea True Connection – More, More, More

Another #MastersMonday post from the archives is here. Today, we’ve got the Mattel Masters of the Universe: Revelation Masterverse Andra!

This figure is based on Andra’s design that debuted in the second episode of Masters Of The Universe: Revelation when Teela, along with Andra (voiced by Tiffany Smith) encounter Stinkor and Mer-Man among others. This is the first time we’ve gotten the Andra character in action figure form, as the character only previously appeared in the Masters of the Universe newspaper comic strip, which did not have any merchandise until the hardcover collection of the strips was released by Dark Horse.

Masters Of The Universe: Revolution may no longer be a top animated series on Netflix, but that doesn’t mean I will stop talking about it anytime soon.
