Ultimate Marty McFly ‘1985’

Recommended music: Alan Silvestri with The Outatime Orchestra- Back to the Future

On this #WhateverWednesday, we’re back in 1985 with the NECA Back to the Future Ultimate Marty McFly!

In the film, Marty meets up with Doc Brown at Twin Pines Mall to witness Doc’s dog “Einstein” become the world’s first time-traveler.

“Wait a minute, wait a minute, Doc, are you telling me that you built a time machine out of a Deloreon?” – Marty

This ‘1985’ version of Marty was the first release in the line and accurately represents Marty’s look for much of the film (and promotional materials). In addition to the layered look of Marty’s signature vest and jacket, the figure comes with an extra head sculpt (wearing sunglasses), alternate hands (including a hand that holds a tiny guitar pick, a yellow guitar, Doc’s camcorder, Marty’s backpack, and skateboard.

We’re just 10 weeks away from the 40th anniversary of Back to the Future! I figure it’s worth jumping in the Delorean to revisit some great toys from the film.

From the Archives: Mosquito in amber

Recommended music: Mark Leggett – Tale from the Amber

For this #WhateverWednesday from the archives,  I’ve got a mosquito in amber!

More specifically, it’s a diptera in burmite. Now, I don’t know if this little guy also contains dinosaur DNA, nor am I going to check, but I thought it was a pretty neat blast from the past.

Crazy Harry

Recommended music: The Muppet Show Episode 306: Jean Stapleton – “I’m Just Wild About Harry”

Coming in hot this #SomethingElseSunday, we’re still celebrating 70 years of the Muppets! Here’s a Muppet character you’ve seen many times who always ends the scene with the bang. From the Palisades Toys Muppets line, it’s Crazy Harry!

Harry made his debut in the 1974 Muppet Show pilot “The Muppets Valentine Show.” He was originally called Crazy Donald. This name referred to Don Sahlin, the Muppet builder who created the Muppets’ special effects explosions at the time. For his appearance in the next pilot, “The Muppet Show: Sex and Violence,” the name was changed to Crazy Harry

The character appeared in more than 20 episodes of The Muppet Show during its run and dozens of other Muppet productions since. He is known for popping up when any character makes the smallest mention of anything explosion-related, repeats what was stated as a question, and then sets off an explosion himself. In 2007, Muppets writer Jim Lewis was asked why Harry was seen less frequently. He replied, “A combination of things. First, Jerry Nelson performs Crazy Harry, and his availability is one factor. Second, Crazy Harry is always punctuation, so the scene has to fit his personality and his unique talent for blowing things up. And third, unofficially, I find that in a post-9/11 world, blowing stuff up—even in foolish fun—isn’t as funny as it once was. But again, that’s my personal opinion.”

In the Palisades toy line, Harry made his debut in series 2 and was the only Crazy Harry toy available until being included in Disney’s Vinylmation line. The figure came well armed with two sticks of dynamite, a barrel of gun powder, a bomb, and a spring-loaded plunger. The cannon here was borrowed from another line but fits perfectly for the season two sketch where the Great Gonzo attempts to catch a cannonball with Harry as his assistant.

And now for something completely different (again) on this #SomethingElseSunday from the archives, we’ve got the Diamond Select Monty Python and the Holy Grail  Sir Bedevere!

This is another good-looking figure from the line, but Bedevere would definitely benefit from having a bit more articulation. Knees would be nice, as well as elbows, to better hold his shield.

“How do you know so much about swallows?”

And now for something completely different on this #SomethingElseSunday from the archives, we’ve got the Diamond Select Monty Python and the Holy Grail King Arthur!

This was a fun toy line that featured great sculpts and paints on each figure. The figure stands even play dialogue from the film with the press of a grail-shaped button. The downside is that the 7″ line only had one wave of three figures. In contrast, the 12″ Sideshow line featured much more of the cast throughout multiple waves.

Ultimate Doc Brown ‘Hazmat Suit’

Recommended music: Time Bomb Town – Lindsey Buckingham [This song plays briefly at Marty’s house before Doc calls him to meet at the mall]

We’re back in town this #WhateverWednesday, and tonight we’re taking a look at the NECA Back to the Future Doc Brown ‘Hazmat Suit’!

“Good evening, I’m Doctor Emmett Brown. I’m standing in the parking lot of Twin Pines Mall. It’s Saturday morning, October 26, 1985, 1:18 a.m. and this is temporal experiment number one. C’mon, Einey, hey hey boy, get in there, that a boy, in you go, get down, that’s it.” – Doc Brown

In the film, Doc is ready to take his experiment to the next level, and puts his (and Marty’s) life on the line literally as he stands in front of the Delorean that is moving at nearly 90 miles per hour, counting on it to evaporate just before mowing them over (twice!) in the Twin Pines parking lot.

This ‘hazmat suit’ version of Doc perfectly captures the facial likeness of Christopher Lloyd in his accurately detailed suit. The figure comes with a clipboard, an extra set of arms (with gloved hands for handling plutonium), interchangeable heads so Doc can look proud of his latest invention or shocked when he is discovered by the Libyans who he pulled a fast one on, the time machine remote control, and a revolver for defending himself against the Libyans until Doc discovers he forgot to load the gun. 😛

We’re just 11 weeks away from the 40th anniversary of Back to the Future! I figure it’s worth jumping in the Delorean to revisit some great toys from the film.

“If my calculations are correct, when this baby hits eighty-eight miles per hour, you’re gonna see some serious shit.” – Doc

For this #WhateverWednesday from the archives, we’re spending some more time with Plunderlings Berserker Gobbler!

These pictures were from my 2024 trip to Kauai where Gobbler was an unexpected site for folks exploring the Maniniholo Dry Cave that day.

That’s it for tonight, I am planning to put together a video at some point, but I’m happy just to share these pictures for now. Cheers!🍹😎
