From the Archives: Brer Rabbit & Other Model Sheets

For this #WhateverWednesday, I’m still thinking about Splash Mountain, so enjoy one last look at some Song of the South model sheets of Brer Rabbit, the Tar Baby and concepts for other animals to stand in for Uncle Remus on Splash Mountain that I acquired from the collection of Disney Legend Ralph Kent.

Also, some SOTS artwork from #BrittneyAnnArt that still hasn’t made it into a proper frame.

Again, it seems this video works best with added music from the Instagram app. I guess I really should revisit this artwork with still images instead of video.

MuppetVision 3D & Vacation Pepe

Recommended music: King Prawn – Day In Day Out

For this #WhateverWednesday, we’ve got the Palisades Muppets Vacation Pepe!

Even though Disney is giving Pepe the character spotlight this week for its #TheMuppets70 campaign, that’s just a coincidence, as I was already planning to share this picture this week. I recently had the chance to take a family trip to Florida and experience MuppetVision 3D at Disney’s Hollywood Studios one last time before the show closes forever on June 7, 2025.

Pepe the King Prawn does not actually appear in the 4D theme park attraction which debuted in 1991, as the character did not show up until the mid-1990s production, Muppets Tonight. Even though he wasn’t included in the show, he did enjoy popping up around water attractions throughout my recent trip, so I’ll have some more random pics further down the road. 😁

It’s #TurtleTuesday, and this an April O’Neil figure from NECA!

This is not your typical newswoman/friend of turtles as this figure depicts April as she appeared in “The Catwoman from Channel Six.” Yes, after her genes are inadvertently spliced with a cat in a transporter, and she is transformed into a mutant catwoman.

The figure comes with a cat, and is very cat-like with a cat head, claws, and cat tail. Unfortunately, it would be tricky to make this one into a non-feline April, but there are two other cartoon April releases that fit the bill just fine.

Keno

Recommended music: Rick Ross – Hustlin’

On this #TurtleTuesday, we’ve got a character specifically from TMNT II: The Secret of the Ooze, it’s the NECA Keno!

This version of the character appears to have come with the same head as the SDCC version which used his more familiar pizza-delivery costume, but also came with a scooter and a bunch of other unnecessary add-ons to inflate the price. This version was easier to acquire coming with the large foot soldier in a two-pack and including a punching bag, an extra head and hands, and a one-of-a-kind accessory as far as I know – a pile of bells.

In the film, Keno is going undercover trying to join the Foot Clan, and after successfully kickboxing some other new foot recruits, must undergo a task where he removes as many bells from a mannequin as possible, all without making a sound. Thankfully, a smoke bomb conveniently hides Raphael, who sneaks in to assist with the bell removal process and hides back out of sight before the smoke fully clears the room.

Yes, NECA could have included a few more bells, and I could have also replaced Keno’s gloves with regular hands 😄… but I like how the picture turned out anyway.

The Swedish Chef

So, this #SomethingElseSunday, we’re still celebrating 70 years of the Muppets! I know that you’ll recognize this guy from the Palisades Toys Muppets line, it’s The Swedish Chef!

The Swedish Chef debuted on The Muppet Show: Sex and Violence special in early 1975 which served as the second pilot for The Muppet Show. From this December 1974 taping all the way until The Muppets at Walt Disney World in 1990, Chef was performed by Jim Henson himself.

The character appeared in over 30 episodes during the initial run of The Muppet Show with sketches from his kitchen and has made dozens of other appearances since whenever anything culinary related comes into play for a Muppet project.

For the Palisades toy line, Chef in his blue striped shirt was included in the pictured Swedish Kitchen Playset and nearly 40 other accessories to fill out the set piece. The figure was repainted twice for single releases with new accessories based on additional Muppet Show episodes.

From the Archives: Peter Venkman

Recommended music: Elmer Bernstein – Ghostbusters Theme

For this #SomethingElseSunday, we’ve warmed up past #GhostbustersFrozenEmpire, and are taking another look at the Mattel “Matty Collector” Ghostbusters Peter Venkman.

This Venkman figure was supposed to be the first figure in the line but was replaced with an Egon Spengler figure as Mattel had not yet secured the likeness rights of future Groundhog Day star, Bill Murray. Thankfully, Mattel got it figured out, and this figure hit the Matty Collector site the following year.
