From the Archives: DST Terror Dog

Recommended music:  Elmer Bernstein – Who Brought the Dog

Today, for this #SomethingElseSunday post from the archives, we’re looking at the Diamond Select Ghostbusters Terror Dog!

“So, does anybody want to play Parcheesi?… Okay. Who brought the dog?”

NECA Toys was technically the first company to produce a movie-accurate Terror Dog for their Ghostbusters line back in 2004. It featured nine points of articulation, light-up eyes, and two unique releases for Vinz Clortho and Zuul… I ultimately passed on the (short-lived) line. I waited for Terror Dogs to be included in the subsequent Mattel GB line so they would be in scale with the figures, but unfortunately, they were never made.

Thankfully, Diamond Select was able to put out this figure 13 years later in their 7-inch line, boasting a great sculpt by Gentle Giant, 18 points of articulation, and interchangeable horns to represent your choice of Vinz Clortho or Zuul! The scale may be off slightly for my Mattel figures, but honestly, the dogs themselves aren’t a consistent size in the film.

From the Archives: Knight of Ni

Recommended video: Monty Python and the Holy Grail – The Knights Who Say “Ni!”

“The Knights Who Say Ni demand a sacrifice!”

Now this #SomethingElseSunday, we’ve got Toy Vault Monty Python and the Holy Grail A Knight of Ni mini bobbler!

This week marks 50 years since the film opened in theaters in the United States. The film is being shown in select movie theaters TODAY as a Fathom Event to commemorate the occasion. It’s also screening again in a couple days; see local listings.

While this guy is a bit underscaled next to the Diamond Select action figure line, he physically fits on the shelf better while still requesting… a shrubbery!

There were just a few more figures made for this scarce line of bobbleheads, but the manufacturer smartly only labeled this character as a knight of Ni and not the Knights Who Say Ecky-ecky-ecky- ecky-pikang-zoom-boing-mumble-mumble.🤪

“I move for no man!”

This #SomethingElseSunday, we’ve also got the Factory Entertainment Monty Python and the Holy Grail Black Knight Talking Premium Motion Statue.

Today marks the 50th anniversary of the Holy Grail screening in Los Angeles. Tomorrow marks 50 years since the film opened to the public in the United States. To commemorate the occasion, the film is being shown in select theaters next week as a Fathom Event. See local listings.

This guy scales well with the Diamond Select figure line. It features magnetic removable arms (mere flesh wounds). It also includes a stand that plays 10 lines of dialogue from the film. Fun, detailed piece! Unfortunately, I don’t think the line went any further than this one character.

“Come back ‘ere and take what’s coming to you… I’ll bite your legs off!”

From the Archives: Sir Robin

Recommended video: Monty Python and the Holy Grail – The Tale of Brave Sir Robin

And now for something completely different on this #SomethingElseSunday from the archives, we’ve got the Diamond Select Monty Python and the Holy Grail Sir Robin!

Today marks the 50th anniversary of the Holy Grail screening in Los Angeles, with tomorrow marking 50 years since the film opened to the public in the United States. To commemorate the occasion, the film is being shown in select theaters next week as a Fathom Event. See local listings.

This figure accurately captures the likeness of a 1970s Eric Idle and comes with a comically large shield. His “stand” doesn’t work well to hold the figure, but does play several humorous lines from the film with the press of the grail-shaped button.

“When danger reared its ugly head,
He bravely turned his tail and fled.”

From the Archives: Sir Bedevere

Recommended video: Monty Python and the Holy Grail – Camelot Song

And now for something completely different (again) on this #SomethingElseSunday from the archives, we’ve got the Diamond Select Monty Python and the Holy Grail  Sir Bedevere!

This is another good-looking figure from the line, but Bedevere would definitely benefit from having a bit more articulation. Knees would be nice, as well as elbows, to better hold his shield.

“How do you know so much about swallows?”

From the Archives: King Arthur

Recommended video: Monty Python and the Holy Grail – Arthur, king of the Britons

And now for something completely different on this #SomethingElseSunday from the archives, we’ve got the Diamond Select Monty Python and the Holy Grail King Arthur!

This was a fun toy line that featured great sculpts and paints on each figure. The figure stands even play dialogue from the film with the press of a grail-shaped button. The downside is that the 7″ line only had one wave of three figures. In contrast, the 12″ Sideshow line featured much more of the cast throughout multiple waves.

Diamond Select Uruk-Hai Orc

Recommended music: The Warsaw Symphony Orchestra – The Uruk-Hai (Live)

On this #TolkienThursday, we’re still under attack by Orcs. Not just any orc, it’s the Diamond Select Uruk-Hai Orc!

This Uruk-Hai was released as part of series four in the DST Lord of the Rings toy line and was likely the first one I picked up. I don’t normally collect 7-inch scale Diamond Select figures as they are usually just a bit too big to fit in with a 1/12 scale display. This guy, however, was an exception as being a generic orc means he’ll look just fine mixed in with a ToyBiz orc army.

Besides the ugly (and accurate) Uruk Hai head seen here, there is also an alternate helmeted head and weapons option that I display with orcs from The Two Towers. He also comes with a pair of open hands, but I wouldn’t recommend them unless you don’t want your Uruk-Hai to be able to hold a cool shield and scimitar at the same time.😄

In addition to the multiple display options, this line also offers 16 points of articulation in their orcs, far more than the ToyBiz line from 20 years earlier.

From the Archives: Diamond Select Ghostbusters

Recommended music: Ghostbusters (UndreamedPanic Remix)

On this #SomethingElseSunday from the archives, we’ve got this lot of Ghostbusters figures (mostly) from Diamond Select Toys.

This particular group of figures and accessories found a new home when I sold them at my table at last year’s Toy & Doll Supershow in Denver. While I am unfortunately going to miss out on this year’s show, I was willing to let these go to someone else’s collection so that I could focus on the Ghostbusters toy lines already present in my display.
