From the Archives: DST Terror Dog

Recommended music:  Elmer Bernstein – Who Brought the Dog

Today, for this #SomethingElseSunday post from the archives, we’re looking at the Diamond Select Ghostbusters Terror Dog!

“So, does anybody want to play Parcheesi?… Okay. Who brought the dog?”

NECA Toys was technically the first company to produce a movie-accurate Terror Dog for their Ghostbusters line back in 2004. It featured nine points of articulation, light-up eyes, and two unique releases for Vinz Clortho and Zuul… I ultimately passed on the (short-lived) line. I waited for Terror Dogs to be included in the subsequent Mattel GB line so they would be in scale with the figures, but unfortunately, they were never made.

Thankfully, Diamond Select was able to put out this figure 13 years later in their 7-inch line, boasting a great sculpt by Gentle Giant, 18 points of articulation, and interchangeable horns to represent your choice of Vinz Clortho or Zuul! The scale may be off slightly for my Mattel figures, but honestly, the dogs themselves aren’t a consistent size in the film.

From the Archives: Zuul “Gatekeeper of Gozer” (Dana)

Recommended music: Elmer Bernstein – Stairwell

On this #SomethingElseSunday from the archives, we’re looking checking out the Mattel “Matty Collector” Ghostbusters Zuul “Gatekeeper of Gozer” (Dana)!

This was the first action figure of Sigourney Weaver’s memorable character, Dana Barrett, from the film, and a welcome addition to my collection. While Diamond Select and Hasbro may have had a more accurate actor likeness and costume colors, I appreciated this version, which is still the only one to come with interchangeable legs for sitting and standing poses, as well as this rooftop bench accessory.

The bench is nicely detailed, but is a bit underscaled to the point where Louis can’t really fit next to her without Dana’s feet hanging off, but looks great in the package when centered on the bench.

From the Archives: “Marshmallow Mess” Ray

Recommended music: Elmer Bernstein – Finish

On this #SomethingElseSunday from the archives, we’re looking at the Mattel “Matty Collector” Ghostbusters “Marshmallow Mess” Ray Stantz figure with Ghostbusters Logo Base!

This version of Ray was the only “Club Ecto-1 exclusive” from the line, which meant that if you signed up for all of the GB releases for the year, you also got this version of Ray with a bit of marshmallow added. I really wish Mattel had gone further and sculpted a lot of marshmallow sludge on the figure. Venkman was actually the only one of the ‘Busters to escape getting completely doused with marshmallow in the film. Maybe this figure should have been Peter if Mattel was gonna go lazy with the release…

The logo base has a marshmallow mess deco, which is a neat addition. However, it’s not the best accessory included with this figure. This was the first movie Ray figure to finally include his walkie-talkie and Ecto goggles.

“Somebody turn on the lights! Help! Somebody turn on the lights!”
“Go check on that little guy!”

From the Archives: Peter Venkman (slimed)

Recommended music: Elmer Bernstein – Halls

On this #SomethingElseSunday from the archives, we’re taking a look at the Mattel “Matty Collector” Ghostbusters Peter Venkman!

While this slimed version of Dr. Venkman was intended to be the first figure in the line, it ended up looking much better than the slimed Egon, whose suit appears dirty, whereas this one has a more wet, green ectoplasmic goo look to it.

“He slimed me.”

From the Archives: Egon Spengler

Recommended music: Elmer Bernstein – Halls

On this #SomethingElseSunday from the archives, we’ve got another Mattel “Matty Collector” Ghostbusters Egon Spengler!

This Egon figure was actually the first figure released in the line. He comes with a slimed deco, as the figure should have been Venkman, who was actually slimed. The clean version was eventually released more than a year later, but it did not include an added ghost; instead, it featured a stack of books and a simple PKE meter.

“That’s great, Ray! Save some for me! Get down here right away. It just went into a ballroom!”️

From the Archives: Slimer

Recommended music: Foo Fighters – These Days

This #SomethingElseSunday from the archives, we’re taking a look at another Mattel “Matty Collector” Ghostbusters Slimer!

In the first Ghostbusters film, Slimer is the first ghost the team tracks down. They capture him using their proton packs and Ghost Trap.

This figure design features translucent plastic and gives “the Mean Green Ghost” a screaming face, as if he’s roaring down a hallway or being sucked into the Ghost Trap. Slimer was included with the very first figure in the line, Egon Spengler, who was initially supposed to be Peter Venkman. The Ghost Trap was included with the first Winston figure a few months later.

From the Archives: Zombie Taxi Driver Ghost

Recommended music: Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass – Tijuana Taxi

Going places this #SomethingElseSunday from the archives, we’re taking a ride with the Mattel “Matty Collector” Zombie Taxi Driver Ghost!

In the first Ghostbusters film, The Driver is freed from the Containment Unit when Walter Peck shuts down the protection grid. He is later seen entering a New York City taxi cab via the tailpipe. His scene was cut down for the theatrical release, as there is deleted footage of the taxi’s crazy driving, which caused additional cars to crash.

The figure looks great, cast in translucent plastic with good detail on the head and hands. He is only seen from the torso up in the film because he is behind the steering wheel. I prefer this version to the full-bodied Diamond Select Toys version of the character.

Last year marked the 4oth anniversary of the original Ghostbusters film first hitting theaters, and 35 years of Ghostbusters II. ️

From the Archives: Subway Ghost

Recommended music: Mick Smiley – Magic [Skip to 2:19 for the familiar sounding part – DM😉]

So this #SomethingElseSunday from the archives, we’re talking about the Mattel “Matty Collector” line, Subway Ghost!

This character was originally supposed to have three heads, but the practical effect was both too expensive and time-consuming, so the final puppet model was simplified. The model was shot in October of 1983, ahead of principal photography for the first film.

In the movie, this particular ghost is freed from the Containment Unit when Walter Peck shuts down the protection grid and is later seen emerging from a New York City subway station.

The figure is cast in translucent blue and looks great with solid detailing, right down to the tendrils.

Recommended music: 8 Bit Universe – Ghostbusters (2020 Remaster) [8 Bit Tribute to Ray Parker Jr.]

Flying at you on this #SomethingElseSunday from the archives, from the Mattel “Matty Collector” line, “No-Ghost”!

Also known as Mooglie or simply the icon ghost, this simple white ghost has evolved from the original film to a full-fledged character walking through the streets of The Real Ghostbusters animated series and finally to the villain in the 2016 film.

The figure came on a clear acrylic stand, and was packed in with the second figure in the line, Ray Stantz. While this guy seems pretty harmless, we’ve got some spooky ghosts ahead!

This month marks the 41st anniversary of the original Ghostbusters film first hitting theaters, and 36 years of Ghostbusters II. ️

From the Archives: “Ready To Believe You” Peter Venkman

Recommended music: Sci-Fried – We’re Ready To Believe You

On this #SomethingElseSunday from the archives, we’re still ready to believe you with the Mattel “Matty Collector” Peter Venkman!

“Have you or your family ever seen a spook, spectre, or ghost?”

This month marks the 41st anniversary of the original Ghostbusters film first hitting theaters, and 36 years of Ghostbusters II. This figure is a decent likeness of Bill Murray, and I tried to recreate the on-screen look of DOCTOR Venkman as best I could as he casually holds a video camera and sniffer with a PKE Meyer and one hand in his pocket.😄

“We’re ready to believe you!”☝️

Recommended music: Aerosmith – Toys In The Attic

On this #SomethingElseSunday from the archives, we’re ready to believe you with the Mattel “Matty Collector” Egon Spengler!

“Do you experience feelings of dread in your basement or attic?”

This month marks the 41st anniversary of the original Ghostbusters film first hitting theaters, and 36 years of Ghostbusters II. This “Ready To Believe You” Egon figure reuses the previous Harold Ramis head sculpt (though the detail seems a bit “softer” if that makes sense), but it is also nice to see this character get a figure, also not in a jumpsuit.

Recommended music: Philter – Strange Noises

On this #SomethingElseSunday from the archives, we’re ready with the Mattel “Matty Collector” Ray Stantz!

“Are you troubled by strange noises in the middle of the night?” – Ray

This “Ready To Believe You” version of Ray has a slightly upgraded likeness of Dan Aykroyd compared to the first Ray figure in the line, and it was also nice to see the character get a figure not in a jumpsuit.

“If the answer is ‘yes,’ then don’t wait another minute. Pick up the phone and call the professionals…”

From the Archives: Slimer 2

Recommended music: Elmer Bernstein – Mistake

On this #WhateverWednesday from the archives, we’re still rolling with the Mattel “Matty Collector” Slimer!

This translucent, angry little spud was the second release of the character in this particular toy line. Slimer was initially packed with the first Egon figure. You might recall that the Egon figure was supposed to be a slimed Venkman figure. For this version with the tongue, Slimer was actually packed in with Peter Venkman, released 10 months after the first one.

Recommended music: Jive Machine – Walter Peck

On this #WhateverWednesday from the archives, we’re rolling with the Mattel “Matty Collector” Walter Peck!

I really enjoyed this release as it marked not only the first action figure of the character (nearly 26 years after the film debuted), but also came packed with this (minimally) working Containment Unit.🚫👻

From the Archives: Library Ghost

Recommended music: Elmer Bernstein – Library

Also on this #WhateverWednesday from the archives, we’ve got the Mattel “Matty Collector” Library Ghost!

This full torso apparition is real, and she’s really upset about Venkman raising his voice in the library. The figure came as a pack-in with an Egon figure, was cast in a transparent plastic, and turned out great. While I sold off my Diamond Select version of this character at the toy show last year, I held onto the smaller stack of books as you can never have too many of those. 😄
