Frodo & Samwise Gamgee with Elven Boat

Recommended music: Howard Shore – The Breaking of the Fellowship

On this #TolkienThursday, we’re here for the breaking of the Fellowship. From the ToyBiz Fellowship of the Ring line, we have Frodo & Samwise Gamgee with Elven Boat Accessory!

When the Fellowship of the Ring leaves Lothlorien, Lord Celeborn provided them with three elven boats stocked with food and supplies to ease their journey down the Anduin River. As always, Samwise Gamgee joins his friend and master, Frodo Baggins, in their own boat.

While the Sam and Frodo figures in this 2-pack appear to be repacks of the single-carded figures, they also come with new oars, an elven boat, and a water sculpture base. The base does conceal wheels on the bottom, so you can push these two along for some “Elven Boat Action.” While it would have been nice to get a “soggy” version of Samwise, I’m glad ToyBiz at least made the boat (but it doesn’t work as well for Boromir).

Burger King Uruk-Hai

Recommended music: Sean McClure – Blood Bath at Burger King

For this #TolkienThursday, we’re still under attack by Orcs. Not just any orc, it’s the ToyBiz Burger King Uruk-Hai!

This Uruk-Hai orc was unfortunately never available at retail, but only as a part of mail-away offers. The first promotion was through Burger King restaurants (hence the nickname), and second through a DVD offer limited to 5,000 pieces. The flyer found in the Fellowship of the Ring DVD said the limited-edition figure would be free with the purchase of any three FOTR figures (when the UPCs were sent in).

Due to the popularity of the figure, ToyBiz and Burger King were not able to produce sufficient quantities for the demand and had a running change where collectors received a Lurtz figure in the mail instead of the intended figure. Why was this orc so popular? Well, he came with an exclusive head and leather helmet, and none of the orcs released in the line so far even came with a helmet.

I was eventually able to pick up the figure second-hand, and while he is missing the helmet, he does have the unique head sculpt (on a Lurtz body). I also let mine carry this torch in the Fellowship display so he can impress his orc friends by leading them to flame-broiled goodness until he finds a new helmet.

Diamond Select Uruk-Hai Orc

Recommended music: The Warsaw Symphony Orchestra – The Uruk-Hai (Live)

On this #TolkienThursday, we’re still under attack by Orcs. Not just any orc, it’s the Diamond Select Uruk-Hai Orc!

This Uruk-Hai was released as part of series four in the DST Lord of the Rings toy line and was likely the first one I picked up. I don’t normally collect 7-inch scale Diamond Select figures as they are usually just a bit too big to fit in with a 1/12 scale display. This guy, however, was an exception as being a generic orc means he’ll look just fine mixed in with a ToyBiz orc army.

Besides the ugly (and accurate) Uruk Hai head seen here, there is also an alternate helmeted head and weapons option that I display with orcs from The Two Towers. He also comes with a pair of open hands, but I wouldn’t recommend them unless you don’t want your Uruk-Hai to be able to hold a cool shield and scimitar at the same time.😄

In addition to the multiple display options, this line also offers 16 points of articulation in their orcs, far more than the ToyBiz line from 20 years earlier.

Uruk-Hai Warrior

Recommended music: Pianistic – Uruk-Hai Army March Theme

For this #TolkienThursday, we’re still under attack by Orcs. Not just any orcs, from the ToyBiz Fellowship of the Ring line, it’s the Uruk-Hai Warrior!

This Uruk-Hai “with Sword & Shield Battling Actions” was released in a two-pack with Gimli during the first two waves in the line. Like Lurtz, he features the White Hand of Saruman (or Isengard) in select areas to show their allegiance.

As always with this line the look of the figure is spot on to what you see on screen, even with a subtle thumb tab on the back to work some of the action features. This is one of my favorite orcs for army-building, and while I snuck in a DST shield for this shot, I probably need to change up the white hand paint or add custom helmets for more variety.

Lurtz

Recommended music: AudioMachine- My Way Out (with video of Lurtz)

On this #TolkienThursday, we’re still under attack by Orcs. From the ToyBiz Fellowship of the Ring line, we have the commander of the Uruk-Hai, it’s Lurtz!

Lurtz “with Bow Attack Action” was released in a two-pack with Boromir during the first two waves in the line. It was also the first Lord of the Rings action figure I owned. I thought the likeness was close enough to the hulking orc abomination we saw on screen.

The figure was smartly designed to hold a bow in one hand and a notched arrow in the other hand. When you press the button on the back it will pull back the bow and release the arrow for fun firing action.

Aragorn with Arrow Launching Action

Recommended music: ABC – Poison Arrow

For this #TolkienThursday, we’re still under attack by Orcs. Thankfully, from the ToyBiz Fellowship of the Ring line, we have Aragorn with Arrow Launching Action!

Released in the third wave in the line, this is the only Aragorn figure to say “Aragorn” on the package, as the rest of his handful of FOTR figures were labeled with his pseudonym “Strider.” It’s a good-looking figure (when mint, mine has some heavy wear), complete with a muddy deco, 5 o’clock shadow, a good amount of accessories, and an arm moving action feature.

I think that is actually the strangest thing about the figure, as his “real arrow-launching action” doesn’t really come into play when you think of the character. I guess ToyBiz just couldn’t think of another name for Legolas’s action when put onto another character, but I’m guessing they couldn’t package a figure with “Orc Decapitating Action.” 😄

Boromir

Recommended music: Cryptic Dawn – The Ballad of Boromir

On this #TolkienThursday, we’re still at The Argonath, under attack by Orcs. From the ToyBiz Fellowship of the Ring line, we have the valiant warrior Boromir with Battle Attack Action!

Released in a two-pack with Lurtz alongside the first two waves in the line, this was the first Lord of the Rings action figure I owned. I thought the likeness was spot-on to Sean Bean and still prefer this figure to the super poseable version released further on in the line. A large button on the figure’s back works well to turn the head and move the arms, and is hidden when wearing the large, included cape. Besides the well-executed figure design, he also comes with his sword, scabbard, shield, and the horn of Gondor for calling in reinforcements while protecting the Hobbits.
