From the Archives: Willow Ufgood (Heroic Protector with Baby)

Also, on this #WhateverWednesday from the archives, let’s celebrate the Magic of Willow with this Willow Ufgood (Heroic Protector with Baby)!

I might as well get this out of the way, the vintage Willow toy line was… not great. Prior to the film’s release, the toy rights were given to Tonka, who just bought out Kenner Toys a year earlier. This may sound great, as Kenner had produced many great action figure lines of the 1980s including Star Wars, DC Super Powers Collection, and most recently at the time The Real Ghostbusters.

Unfortunately, Tonka did not divide off this license to the Kenner division but kept it in-house, where their popular 80s brands included things like Go-Bots and Pound Puppies. Long story short(ish), the line was considered a failure, and Tonka never financially recovered from taking on Kenner Parker’s debt and was forced to sell to Hasbro itself by 1991.

As far as this figure of “Willow Ufgood (Heroic Protector with Baby)” is concerned, I have the original ‘choking hazard’ variant here. Perhaps I should have left this one carded, as Willow was repackaged without the baby carrier and the tiny Elora Danan figure shortly after the line’s debut, so I’m not sure which version is rarer.

The Willow film turns 37 years old next week. I figure there’ll be a new Willow item to share here for the rest of the month. Happy 37 years to the Magic of Willow!

From the Archives: Willow film Novel

Recommended music: James Horner – Elora Danan

Also, on this #WhateverWednesday from the archives, let’s celebrate the Magic of Willow with this Willow film novel!

Canadian writer Wayland Drew was first hired to pen a movie novelization with 1978’s Corvette Summer. A decade later, he was chosen to write the Willow novelization based on the 7th edition of the screenplay to Willow, which was refined many times over from George Lucas’s original story ideas.

The novel is great as it contains many additional scenes that did not make it to the big screen (though some were shot and deleted). My book club edition was also supposed to contain a “Fabulous 8 page color insert”, but according to the teddy bear stamp inside the back cover declaring “This book belongs to CJ”, a previous owner must have removed the color insert 30 years before I picked up this copy. C’mon CJ! 😄

The Willow film turns 37 years old next week. I figure there’ll be a new Willow item to share here for the rest of the month. Happy 37 years to the Magic of Willow!

Ultimate Doc Brown ‘1955’

Recommended music: Back to the Future (Original Score – Alan Silvestri) – 1.21 Jigowatts

We’re still in 1955 this #WhateverWednesday, and today we’re taking a look at another NECA Back to the Future Doc Brown!

In the film, this younger version of Doc is already conducting experiments like his “brain wave analyzer” on his dog Copernicus, and has yet to lose his large home during the pursuit of time travel before having an accident and meeting the time-traveling Marty.

This ‘1955’ version of Doc still features an excellent likeness of Christopher Lloyd and gives you two head options between his shocked face and another facial expression that is more generic following a head injury.

The figure also comes with some great accessories, including a blueprint of his 1950s home, a sketch of the flux capacitor, gloved or bare hands, goggles, a letter from Marty, and a pipe wrench (I cannot remember him using one in the film, but I assume it was to attach a trailer or work on the Delorean).

We’re just seven weeks away from the 40th anniversary of Back to the Future! I figure it’s worth jumping in the Delorean to revisit some great toys from the film.

Also, I don’t have any NECA BTTF figures I’m willing to part with, but I will have a Marty McFly cosplay vest for sale this weekend, as I’ll be an exhibitor at the Retromania Collectibles Show May 17th & 18th in Aurora! So stop by table 79 (or one of the other hundred tables) for some fun stuff!

From the Archives: Ghostbusters Japanese Movie Program

Recommended music: Atarashii Gakko! – Ghostbusters: Frozen Summer

On this #SomethingElseSunday from the archives, let’s go with this Ghostbusters Japanese movie program.

I wanted to share something to commemorate another 40th anniversary. Released just weeks after Temple of Doom, and arriving in theaters the exact same day as Gremlins in 1984.

Lots of cool “making of” info in here, and again with Google Translate being a big help if you don’t speak the language. Busting makes me feel good!

Ultimate Biff Tannen

Recommended music: Earth Theory – Ode to Biff Tannen

Staying up late this #WhateverWednesday, we’re still in 1955 with the NECA Back to the Future Ultimate Biff Tannen!

In the film, Marty (as “Calvin Klein”) trips up Biff at the diner, which sends the young hot head into a frenzy.

This 1955 version of Biff really captures the look of a young Tom Wilson and really captures his common outfit that he later wears to the Enchantment Under the Sea dance. He comes with two heads (this scowling face doesn’t capture the likeness as well as the neutral face) and an extra set of hands (open and fists pictured here). He also includes some accessories from Back to the Future Part II. These include a tiny Grays Sports Almanac, a flyer for the dance, a bill for his car, and a safe to keep it all in. The safe also holds onto Biff’s precious Oh LàLà magazine, but unfortunately, it is sculpted inside and can’t be easily taken to the dance.

We’re just eight weeks away from the 40th anniversary of Back to the Future! I figure it’s worth jumping in the DeLorean to revisit some great toys from the film.

From the Archives: Gremlins Japanese Movie Program

Recommended music: Jerry Goldsmith – The Gremlin Rag

On this #WhateverWednesday from the archives, let’s go with this Gremlins Japanese movie program.

Another interesting item for the collection, especially since I don’t collect any of the wonderful NECA Gremlins figure, but I wanted to share something to commemorate another 40th anniversary. Released just weeks after Temple of Doom, and arriving in theaters the exact same day as Ghostbusters in 1984.

In addition to the “making of” info and pictures in here, this one has a cool pop-up style movie poster of Gizmo in a box. Fun stuff.

Ultimate Marty McFly ‘Tales From Space’

Recommended music: Eddie Van Halen – “Out The Window” [The actual song played during the scene in the film, NOT Eruption by Van Halen as only Eddie signed off on being included- DM]

On this #WhateverWednesday, we’re jumping ahead (or is it back?) to 1955 with another NECA Back to the Future Ultimate Marty McFly!

In the film, Marty dons a yellow radiation suit while Doc is handling plutonium, which helps to generate 1.21 gigawatts of electricity, which is necessary for the Delorean to travel through time.

“Uh, plutonium, wait a minute, are you tellin’ me that this sucker’s nuclear?”
– Marty

After traveling back to 1955 and finding the teenage version of his father is hesitant to ask the adolescent version of his mother to a high school dance, Marty uses the suit to trick the science fiction-loving (and gullible) George into pursuing Lorraine.

“Silence, Earthling. My name is Darth Vader. I am an extra-terrestrial from the planet Vulcan.” George eats it up, and I’ve always enjoyed the Star Wars connection in the film.

This ‘Tales From Space’ version of Marty looks great and was an outfit I always thought would be cool to have in action figure form. The figure comes with a couple of different head sculpts and mask/hood parts, so you can also display Marty with the mask lid up (I like the “Darth Vader mask” look for today). He also comes armed with a hair dryer and a “brain-melting device,” also known as a Walkman.

We’re just nine weeks away from the 40th anniversary of Back to the Future! I figure it’s worth jumping in the DeLorean to revisit some great toys from the film.

From the Archives: Temple of Doom Japanese Movie Program

Recommended music: John Williams – Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom [I can’t think of the actual track name this matches up with the most from the original soundtrack – DM😉]

For this #WhateverWednesday from the archives, I was originally going to share something with the Temple of Doom arcade game, but I didn’t get around to shooting it yet. Instead, I’m sharing this Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom Japanese movie program.

This was a pretty unique item for the collection, especially since I don’t collect any of the Indiana Jones action figure lines, but I wanted to share something to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the US theatrical release of Temple of Doom. The magazine contains lots of cool behind-the-scenes information and pictures. Also, Google Translate is a big help if you don’t speak the language. 👍

Ultimate Marty McFly ‘1985’

Recommended music: Alan Silvestri with The Outatime Orchestra- Back to the Future

On this #WhateverWednesday, we’re back in 1985 with the NECA Back to the Future Ultimate Marty McFly!

In the film, Marty meets up with Doc Brown at Twin Pines Mall to witness Doc’s dog “Einstein” become the world’s first time-traveler.

“Wait a minute, wait a minute, Doc, are you telling me that you built a time machine out of a Deloreon?” – Marty

This ‘1985’ version of Marty was the first release in the line and accurately represents Marty’s look for much of the film (and promotional materials). In addition to the layered look of Marty’s signature vest and jacket, the figure comes with an extra head sculpt (wearing sunglasses), alternate hands (including a hand that holds a tiny guitar pick, a yellow guitar, Doc’s camcorder, Marty’s backpack, and skateboard.

We’re just 10 weeks away from the 40th anniversary of Back to the Future! I figure it’s worth jumping in the Delorean to revisit some great toys from the film.

From the Archives: Mosquito in amber

Recommended music: Mark Leggett – Tale from the Amber

For this #WhateverWednesday from the archives,  I’ve got a mosquito in amber!

More specifically, it’s a diptera in burmite. Now, I don’t know if this little guy also contains dinosaur DNA, nor am I going to check, but I thought it was a pretty neat blast from the past.

Ultimate Doc Brown ‘Hazmat Suit’

Recommended music: Time Bomb Town – Lindsey Buckingham [This song plays briefly at Marty’s house before Doc calls him to meet at the mall]

We’re back in town this #WhateverWednesday, and tonight we’re taking a look at the NECA Back to the Future Doc Brown ‘Hazmat Suit’!

“Good evening, I’m Doctor Emmett Brown. I’m standing in the parking lot of Twin Pines Mall. It’s Saturday morning, October 26, 1985, 1:18 a.m. and this is temporal experiment number one. C’mon, Einey, hey hey boy, get in there, that a boy, in you go, get down, that’s it.” – Doc Brown

In the film, Doc is ready to take his experiment to the next level, and puts his (and Marty’s) life on the line literally as he stands in front of the Delorean that is moving at nearly 90 miles per hour, counting on it to evaporate just before mowing them over (twice!) in the Twin Pines parking lot.

This ‘hazmat suit’ version of Doc perfectly captures the facial likeness of Christopher Lloyd in his accurately detailed suit. The figure comes with a clipboard, an extra set of arms (with gloved hands for handling plutonium), interchangeable heads so Doc can look proud of his latest invention or shocked when he is discovered by the Libyans who he pulled a fast one on, the time machine remote control, and a revolver for defending himself against the Libyans until Doc discovers he forgot to load the gun. 😛

We’re just 11 weeks away from the 40th anniversary of Back to the Future! I figure it’s worth jumping in the Delorean to revisit some great toys from the film.

“If my calculations are correct, when this baby hits eighty-eight miles per hour, you’re gonna see some serious shit.” – Doc

From the Archives: Gobbler on Hawaiian Vacation 2

Recommended music: Creepy Cave Music – Gemstone Caves

For this #WhateverWednesday from the archives, we’re spending some more time with Plunderlings Berserker Gobbler!

These pictures were from my 2024 trip to Kauai where Gobbler was an unexpected site for folks exploring the Maniniholo Dry Cave that day.

That’s it for tonight, I am planning to put together a video at some point, but I’m happy just to share these pictures for now. Cheers!🍹😎

From the Archives: Slimer 2

Recommended music: Elmer Bernstein – Mistake

On this #WhateverWednesday from the archives, we’re still rolling with the Mattel “Matty Collector” Slimer!

This translucent, angry little spud was the second release of the character in this particular toy line. Slimer was initially packed with the first Egon figure. You might recall that the Egon figure was supposed to be a slimed Venkman figure. For this version with the tongue, Slimer was actually packed in with Peter Venkman, released 10 months after the first one.

Recommended music: Jive Machine – Walter Peck

On this #WhateverWednesday from the archives, we’re rolling with the Mattel “Matty Collector” Walter Peck!

I really enjoyed this release as it marked not only the first action figure of the character (nearly 26 years after the film debuted), but also came packed with this (minimally) working Containment Unit.🚫👻

From the Archives: Library Ghost

Recommended music: Elmer Bernstein – Library

Also on this #WhateverWednesday from the archives, we’ve got the Mattel “Matty Collector” Library Ghost!

This full torso apparition is real, and she’s really upset about Venkman raising his voice in the library. The figure came as a pack-in with an Egon figure, was cast in a transparent plastic, and turned out great. While I sold off my Diamond Select version of this character at the toy show last year, I held onto the smaller stack of books as you can never have too many of those. 😄
