He-Man Serpent Puzzle

Recommended music: Judas Priest – The Serpent and the King

Happy Monday! For this #MastersMonday and the rest of the Mondays in February, let’s check out some vintage Masters of the Universe games and collectibles from 1984. Today’s spotlight is the Golden Masters of the Universe Jigsaw Puzzle with He-Man and a Serpent!

This puzzle shows some classic early MOTU artwork by R.L. Allen, with He-Man facing off against a mysterious serpent. I haven’t found an official name for this art, but it was later used on the front and back covers of a Golden Masters of the Universe coloring book. The serpent looks a bit like creatures from the Filmation animated series and even the Zergoid from the UK MOTU comics, but I think this is its only appearance. You might call it a “sea serpent,” though it looks more like a swamp creature to me.

In 1984, Golden puzzles switched from a 63-piece to a 100-piece format for their 11.5″x15″ puzzles and made subtle changes to the box design. This also increased the recommended age range from age 4-8 to age 5-10. They also stopped listing the puzzle’s name, cross-selling other MOTU puzzles, or showing the typical piece size, as done with previous sets. Fun stuff!
