Izabel #12

Recommended music: M83 – Midnight City

It’s another #FunkoFriday, and today we’re featuring the Funko Pop! Vinyl Saga – Izabel #12!

In Brian K. Vaughan and Fiona Staples’ epic space opera comic series Saga, Izabel is a pink-haired “Horror,” the ghost of a teenager killed by a landmine on Cleave. She becomes a vital protector, babysitter, and emotional anchor for Hazel’s family. First appearing in Issue #2, she bonds with newborn Hazel’s soul to escape her war-torn planet and soon grows from a reluctant ally into a beloved, surrogate family member.

Izabel has a supernatural ability to create terrifying, realistic illusions that keep hunters away, making her a strong protector for Hazel. Her ghostly perspective makes her a practical voice of reason. She often helps Alana and Marko work through arguments and gives honest, down-to-earth advice when things get tough. Without giving too much away, Izabel spends years out of sight, then returns to remind readers of the harsh realities of the family’s wartime journey through the galaxy.

Although the comic started in 2012, Image Comics took a long time to release licensed Saga merchandise. Another obvious reason for this lack of merch is the series’s mature content. Its graphic sexuality and violence make it a difficult sell for big-box retailers like Target or Walmart.

Thankfully, Funko released more than a dozen Pop! Vinyl Saga figures (including variants) in 2018, while aiming at the specialty collector rather than the mass market. This figure of Izabel is a fair likeness of the character, even with the oversized head and blacked-out eyes. While Funko makes good use of a clear stand to elevate the specter once freed from the original box, her exposed intestines are not sculpted as extensively as shown on the cover art for issue #3, as seen here. While labeled as a Hot Topic exclusive, this release can also be found cheaper from other sources without the ‘exclusive’ sticker on the box.
