Ghostbusters Titans Ecto-1

This #SomethingElseSunday, we’re “ready to believe you” as we look at the Ghostbusters Titans Ecto-1!

The Ecto-1 is as much a character in Ghostbusters as the team itself. The iconic 1959 Cadillac Miller-Meteor ambulance has evolved over the franchise’s 40+ years. The original Ecto-1 seen in the 1984 film is a white-and-red cruiser packed with rooftop gadgets and a distinctive wailing siren.

Simplified for animation, the Ecto-1 became brighter and sleeker in the 1986 cartoon The Real Ghostbusters. It also introduced a massive expanded universe of vehicles, including the Ecto-2 autogyro helicopter and the Ecto-3 go-kart.

Upgraded to the Ecto-1a for Ghostbusters II in 1989, the vehicle featured digital LED billboard displays on the roof, more intricate technical gear, and a vibrant yellow-and-black hazard striping paint job. It saw further upgrades for the Extreme Ghostbusters cartoon in 1997. It was rebuilt into a rugged, futuristic machine with advanced tech and a wheelchair ramp for the new team member, Garrett.

The 2016 Ghostbusters film reset the universe, swapping the classic car’s fins with a boxy 1984 Cadillac Fleetwood hearse and adding a rooftop nuclear ghost chipper. In Ghostbusters: Afterlife (2021) and Frozen Empire (2024), the original 1959 Cadillac returned, looking worn, like a barn find. It got new features for modern ghostbusting, such as a gunner seat that swings out from the side door and a rear ramp for launching the remote-controlled RTV (Remote Trap Vehicle).

Along with its on-screen changes, many Ecto-1 toys have been released over the years. The Ghostbusters Titans 4.5″ Ecto-1 vinyl toy first appeared in April 2015. Later that year, a glow-in-the-dark “Nerd Block” version was released for San Diego Comic-Con.

The vinyl toy doesn’t have moving wheels or parts, but it turns the big 1959 Cadillac into a chunky, cartoon-like chibi version. Even at this small size, it keeps details like the door logos, red tail fins, and rooftop gadgets. It’s a great way to add the famous car to your Ghostbusters display without taking up much shelf space.
