Lying Cat (Pink)

Recommended music: Cocteau Twins – Cherry-coloured Funk

It’s another #FunkoFriday, and today we’re featuring yet another version of the Funko Pop! Vinyl Saga – Lying Cat #11!

Here are seven well-known cats that are either pink or associated with the color pink.

7. Marie from The Aristocats
Marie is a sassy white Turkish Angora kitten, known for her big pink bow, collar, and ladylike personality. She made such an impression on us that my wife and I chose her name for our daughter’s middle name.

6. Mew from Pokémon
Mew is a mythical pink, cat-like Pokémon. It’s playful, curious, and carries the genetic code of all Pokémon in its DNA. I’m not a huge Pokémon fan, but this character has been popular since it first appeared in Pokémon: The First Movie in the late 90s.

5. Snagglepuss
Snagglepuss is Hanna-Barbera’s theater-loving, sophisticated pink cougar. He’s famous for saying, “Heavens to Murgatroyd!” and “Exit, stage left!” He first showed up in 1959 and has been part of the Hanna-Barbera crew ever since.

4. Princess Carolyn from BoJack Horseman
Princess Carolyn is a fuchsia-colored Hollywood talent agent. She’s independent, talented, and famous for her tricky tongue-twisters.

3. Hello Kitty
Hello Kitty is Sanrio’s global pop-culture icon. She’s a cute white Japanese Bobtail with a signature pink style, bows, and no drawn mouth. My kids have always liked her, but I find her a bit boring.

2. The Cheshire Cat from Disney’s Alice in Wonderland
The Cheshire Cat is a mischievous, grinning character with bright pink and purple stripes who can disappear, leaving just his smile behind. He can be annoying, but he adds a lot of humor to the movie.

1. The Pink Panther
The Pink Panther is the picture of cool, silent-era style, known for his jazzy theme song and clever tricks. When I was a kid, our James Bond VHS tapes often had a Pink Panther short before the movie. Both series were owned by United Artists (later MGM/UA), so the studio could show them together without extra fees. As an adult, I kept this tradition going with my kids by streaming the original Pink Panther short before we watched the corresponding Bond movie on Blu-ray for the first time.

So, why am I mentioning these pink cats?

In the comic series Saga, Lying Cat is a sphinx-like alien who is both a loyal companion and a moral guide to the bounty hunter called The Will. Her main trait is that she cannot tolerate lies. She calls out liars and helps people let go of painful, false beliefs about themselves, offering comfort and healing. Whenever someone nearby knowingly says something untrue, she immediately growls her famous catchphrase: “Lying.”

Over the years, Image Comics and creators Brian K. Vaughan and Fiona Staples have teamed up with different companies to make official merchandise for Saga’s popular character, including Funko. In 2018, Funko released more than a dozen Pop! Vinyl Saga figures, and almost half of them were Comics Series #11: Lying Cat. Besides the regular teal version and the gold repaint [see last week’s post], this pink version is only available at Barnes & Noble stores. It reminds me of all the other famous pink cats.
