This #MastersMonday, I’m excited for the announcement that last month’s Masters of the Universe live-action film will hit Amazon Prime this Wednesday! To mark the occasion, I’m sharing a greatest hits collection with another Spotify playlist featuring music from the blog called Now That’s What I Call Toy Music!
Launched in the UK in 1983, the “Now That’s What I Call Music!” series became a massive global phenomenon, serving as the definitive soundtrack for pop culture across several decades. The origin of its iconic name is surprisingly quirky: it was inspired by a 1920s Danish bacon advertisement featuring a singing pig, which the series’ creator famously encountered in a dream.
The brand’s success is unprecedented in the music industry, with the series selling over 300 million albums worldwide. The first volume, “Now 1,” made an immediate impact by debuting at number one on the UK charts. It set the stage for hundreds of subsequent volumes documenting the evolving landscape of popular music.
You may wonder what this has to do with talking about toys every day. I try to have a daily theme for whichever toy I’m discussing and accompany the picture and text with music that fits the theme. Although a couple of repeats have slipped in over the years, nearly all the 1000+ posts have a unique song embedded on Instagram and are also streamable on YouTube if you read the post via email or on dalestoys.com.
While I’m taking a break from new photography, I decided to put together a Spotify playlist with music from the #MastersMonday posts from the blog’s first year. Not every song I’ve shared is on Spotify, but many are, so you’ll quickly notice a theme. Today’s list is heavy with Bear McCreary’s score for the Netflix MOTU shows. You also get a fun mix of classic funk, pop, and rock, running nearly three hours.
