Rogue One: Mission Briefing Part 18

Recommended music: GUNSHIP – Tech Noir (Instrumental)

This #StarWarsSaturday, we’re looking ahead to the 10th anniversary of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story in December. Check out these trading cards from Topps Star Wars: Rogue One: Mission Briefing!

Since my action figures are still packed away, waiting for a new display, the cards keep coming out to play.

Topps released the Rogue One: Mission Briefing trading card set in September 2016 to build excitement for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. The main set has 100 cards covering stories from Episodes I to VI and the animated series of that era, including the creation and destruction of the Death Star and other storylines that connect to Rogue One.

Character Foil Cards were a 9-card insert set that came in 1:6 packs, about four per hobby box. Unlike the standard cardstock base set, these inserts use a full metallic foil look that gives the artwork a glossy, eye-catching shine. They focus on key Rebel heroes, Imperial villains, and military units introduced in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.

Today, I’m showing the next four cards in the base set, which moves on to a quick recap of 1980’s Star Wars: Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back. This is probably the shortest possible recap of the film, as I spent more than a year of #StarWarsSaturday posts just on Hoth, and we still didn’t cover everything there.

Anyways, we get one shot of the entire opening battle showing Imperial AT-AT walkers marching across the icy landscape of Hoth. Next, we see Luke Skywalker practicing a handstand on Dagobah under the watchful eye of Jedi Master Yoda, with R2-D2 resting nearby. Though none of these characters appear in Rogue One, we do see the Force in the film, but in a much different light than the swamps of Dagobah.

The next card shows Darth Vader speaking with the gigantic hologram projection of Emperor Palpatine inside his star destroyer. This fits well with scenes involving Vader or Imperial leadership from Rogue One. Finally, we see the dramatic Cloud City chamber scene when Han Solo is lowered into the carbon-freezing pit and emerges “frozen” in a block until the next film. This served as a safe escape plan because Harrison Ford, unlike Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher, had only signed a two-film contract and had not committed to a third movie, leaving his return uncertain.

Yes, Spider-Man is now playing in theaters, but you also have great summer movie options at home, including the latest Star Wars film. The Mandalorian & Grogu movie is no longer in local theaters but is available to stream with Premium Video On Demand. Masters of the Universe has finished its theatrical run and remains one of the top movies streaming on Amazon Prime!
