It’s #MastersMonday, and I’m excited to share something new. Since my action figures are still packed away, waiting for a new display, some recent comics will be coming out to play. This week, we’re taking a look at Masters of the Universe: Wings of Fate No. 2!
Masters of the Universe: The Wings of Fate, published by Dark Horse Comics, is a four-issue miniseries that fills some timeline gaps from the recent movie. In May, I spoke with the series’ writer, Tim Sheridan, at FanExpo Denver before the film and comic’s release.
After seeing the film, you can see that Sheridan made a great choice by telling this story during the 15-year time jump in the movie. Issue #2 picks up where the previous issue ended with Orko continuing his side quest with the Sorceress (in the form of the falcon, Zoar) and Squink, an obscure Filmation character whose species was referenced in the live-action film more than 40 years later.
I’m still not going to give much of the story away and have removed the dialogue from these pages, but it’s a quick read you’ll likely enjoy if you liked the film. Thankfully, the character matchup on this issue’s cover comes to fruition in the story, though now I want an entire issue of Man-At-Arms versus Goat Man and other villains, as Duncan mostly fought Trap Jaw one-on-one in the movie.
Besides seeing the film designs for the Talon Fighter and Sky-Sled, the artwork by Will Sliney with colors by Israel Silva really pops with more vibrant colors than on the big screen. I also had to share this panel with Beast Man, as I really wish his design and color palette in the movie were more like this comic, but we can say his appearance changed a lot over the 15-year gap in the film.
I picked up this second issue early on release day from a local comic shop, having learned my lesson when the first issue sold out quickly. Multiple MOTU comic books actually dropped on the same day last month, but you’ll have to wait until next week to hear about the rest.
Good journey! – DM
