Recommended music: The Pretenders – I’ll Stand by You
It’s #TolkienThursday, and since my action figures are still packed away, awaiting a new display, posts from the archive will keep coming into play.
In my original blog post, I picked a fun 1990s pop song instead of Howard Shore’s score from The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring. This time, I wanted to pair today’s featured toy with… another 1990s pop power ballad. 😄
“I’ll Stand by You” really fits the ToyBiz Samwise Gamgee with Elven Boat figure, which shows Sam at the climax of FotR. At this point in the film, Sam is at his most vulnerable yet determined moment as he steps off solid ground to pursue Frodo, even though he can’t swim. Chrissie Hynde’s anthem takes that desperate moment and turns it into a promise: Sam refuses to let Frodo carry his burden alone, no matter how deep the water is.
The song matches the intensity of the scene, starting with a quiet, steady promise, just like Sam watching the boat leave, and then builds into a strong, sweeping chorus as he jumps into the river. Sam steps into danger because staying behind was never an option.
