Recommended music: David Bowie – Space Oddity
It’s #SomethingElseSunday, and since my action figures are still packed and waiting for a new display, I’ll have to dig into the archives and revisit some old toys for now.
When I first wrote about Link on the blog, I didn’t pick any music for him. Instead, I shared a ‘Pigs in Space’ sketch featuring Link. Now I’ve finally found a song that really suits the character.
David Bowie’s “Space Oddity” is a great fit for the Palisades Toys Captain Link Hogthrob figure. The song captures the mix of showy confidence, old-school sci-fi, and over-the-top drama that make Link who he is. Link is the classic pompous space commander, always striking a heroic pose, and dressed in a spotless uniform. Bowie’s famous song matches this big personality, with its dramatic countdown and a blend of acoustic and synth sounds that feel less like a regular pop song and more like a dramatic broadcast from a starship that’s gone a bit off course.
The song’s vintage space vibe and Major Tom’s cool, distant attitude match Link’s clueless behavior on the Pigs in Space bridge. The song turns a simple action figure into a movie-worthy character on a wild space adventure, showcasing the silly greatness of Jim Henson’s most self-assured pig.
