Masters Of The Universe 4K Steelbook

Happy #MastersMonday, He-Fans and She-Ravers! Good things come to those who wait. This week, we’re looking at the Amazon Exclusive Masters Of The Universe 4K UHD/Blu-ray Steelbook!

The Masters Of The Universe 4K UHD/Blu-ray Steelbook delivers a visually stunning presentation on your screen and physical media shelf. Despite the light bonus content, the set is a must-have for MOTU collectors.

I’m confident the 4K Ultra HD version looks great with its Dolby Vision colors and Dolby Atmos sound. I haven’t tried those features myself because I’ve been happy watching the movie on Amazon Prime and on the regular Blu-ray that comes with this set.

The big downside to this set is the lack of supplemental bonus content. While I appreciate the physical extras included, the on-disc video features lack an exhaustive, deep-dive documentary on the production history of this summer’s film and lean more toward promotional material. The special features include a Behind-the-Scenes Promotional Gallery and a three-minute featurette called “Masters of Light: Skies of Eternia Drone Spectacle” from a drone show in LA last spring around the film’s premiere. They offer a fun look at promotional events, visual effects, and world-building behind the feature, but they tend to be brief. I can’t be the only MOTU fan looking for extensive audio commentaries and detailed retrospective making-of documentaries featuring the original cast and crew.

On the physical side, I’ve never been into collecting Steelbooks, as these premium releases usually come at a higher price point, but this one looks pretty cool, with the back featuring a rare promotional image. Though there are no paper inserts inside with the discs, a shrunken copy of the comic He-Man and the Masters of the Universe: The Wings of Fate #1 [See my review from a few months ago] was stuck on the back of the case with glue dots. Although it is about one centimeter too tall to fit inside, this reprint features a shiny metallic cover and is already being kept with my other MOTU comics. [Yes, I will get to covering issues 3 and 4 on the blog at some point]

Ultimately, while the special features package is lighter than expected for a major franchise release, the combination of physical goodies like the mini comic book and the sharp steelbook case still makes it a worthwhile piece for both MOTU and physical media enthusiasts.
