From the Archives: Screeech

Recommended music: Lynyrd Skynyrd – Free Bird

Happy Monday, MOTU fans! I hope you had a great weekend. For this #MastersMonday post from the archives, we’re looking at another creature from 1983 in the vintage Mattel Masters of the Universe toyline: it’s Screeech!

This ‘Barbarian Bird’ is a purple-and-blue repaint of Zoar, except this time, on the side of the Evil Warriors. This figure is at least the third time Mattel has used the mold, as Zoar was also a repaint of an eagle from the Big Jim toyline. Screech came armored in its “bomb pack”, could flap its wings by use of a lever on its leg, and could sit on the included perch.

The Screech figure was available in window-box packaging by itself, then later in 2-pack gift sets with Skeletor, Battle Armor Skeletor, and Trap Jaw.

The bird is briefly seen in the Filmation He-Man and the Masters of the Universe animated series, and just a few different Golden Books, where he is typically drawn small enough to perch on Skeletor’s arm before flying out to do the bidding of the evil lord of destruction. The vintage toy, being 100% parts reuse, meant that he dwarfed the basic 5.5″ figure and couldn’t reasonably attach to his master’s wrist. This scale was corrected with a smaller version of the character in the Masters of the Universe Classics line more than 25 years later.

From the Archives: Evil Horde

Recommended music: Breaking Benjamin – So Cold

On this #SomethingElseSunday post from the archives, we’ve got a Masters of the Universe collaboration with Eternian Epic Imagery. This week’s theme is “Evil Horde.”

This image was my first contribution to the “Eternian Epic Imagery” group on Instagram. If you search for it, you’ll find all kinds of cool pictures with this week’s Evil Horde theme. For my picture, I chose to share my Mattel Masters of the Universe Classics Battle Armor He-Man.

While I swapped out the MOTUC head for a custom one to get a little more expression, I still used one of my favorite MOTU figures to be at the center of the action. He-Man is surrounded by the Evil Horde in a nod to issue six of the 2013 He-Man DC comic, “Blood Ties”. He-Man certainly looks outnumbered, and I don’t think Mekaneck will be much help. Also, I’ll leave it up to the viewer to decide if that is falling snow or the ashes of war.

Revolution Skeletek

Recommended music: Oingo Boingo – Weird Science

Happy Monday, MOTU fans! So this #MastersMonday finds us continuing our look at Revolution figures in the Mattel Masters of the Universe Masterverse line. Next up: Skeletek!

In the closing moments of the Netflix Masters of the Universe: Revelation animated series, Skeletor tries to attack the idol of Motherboard. This backfires on him as the statue comes to life and immediately infects Skeletor with a techno virus, as he turns to technology in place of magic in the Revolution series. This Skeletor 2.0 figure from Mattel features his transformed cybernetic version of himself with an oversized havoc staff ram head permanently replacing his arm, which is also reminiscent of the ‘snapping skull’ accessory for Terror Claws Skeletor. During the season, he uses this arm to infect Two-Bad and others with some sort of techno virus as well.

Mattel revealed this Skeletor and the rest of Masterverse wave 11 at San Diego Comic-Con 2023, a full five months before Masters of the Universe Revolution appeared on Netflix in January of 2024, with the wave hitting store shelves in the spring.

The sculpt and paint on the figure are similar to the cartoon, and Skeletor comes with 30 points of articulation, one alternate open hand, and his crown from the show. Overall, it’s a decent figure, and the oversized cybernetic legs definitely give me a Clone Wars Darth Maul type of vibe.

Masters of the Universe Revelation/Revolution turned four years old this year! I “figure” there’ll be a new figure from this series to share here for the rest of the year!

Recommended music: DJ Goblin – WARHORSE

Happy Monday, MOTU fans! I hope you had a great weekend. For this #MastersMonday post from the archives, we’re moving on to highlighting 1984 releases from the vintage Mattel Masters of the Universe line. Today, we’re taking a look at the Heroic Armored War Horse, Stridor!

Stridor is a fun character that may have first been seen in the Filmation He-Man and the Masters of the Universe series, as being created by Man-At-Arms. However, in the vintage toyline, he was usually depicted with Fisto riding him. In fact, Stridor was also available in a 2-pack with Fisto and makes his only mini-comic appearance in Fisto’s comic “Clash of Arms”.

While that was a fun debut for the character, I think I remember him most from the Golden book “Secret of the Dragon’s Egg,” where Beast Man thought he could control him (I don’t think it worked out). Yes, Goat Man also showed up in that story. 😁

Favorite Episode

Recommended music: Dr. Dre – The Next Episode (Instrumental)

On this #SomethingElseSunday, we’ve got another Masters of the Universe collaboration with Eternian Epic Imagery. This week’s theme is “Favorite Episode.”

Our goal this week was to recreate a scene or tribute to an animated episode from the Masters of the Universe franchise. With nearly 400 episodes to choose from across the various series, including Filmation’s He-Man and She-Ra series, The New Adventures of He-Man, She-Ra and the Princesses of Power, and the 2002 and 2021 He-Man and the Masters of the Universe series, there were many great options.

I decided to go with episode 10 of the Filmation He-Man and the Masters of the Universe series, “A Friend in Need.” This is one where Teela’s friend Ileena is swayed to use an addictive potion and steal a device called a transmutator, basically the “Say no to drugs” episode of the series. I made a custom figure of Ileena some time ago, and have a ton of original artwork from the episode as well. I’m planning to share all that at some point, but in the meantime, here is a quick homage.

Favorite Episode Collab

One of the most well-known cartoon series of the 1980s, He-Man and the Masters of the Universe, ran for two seasons and is still watched by droves. It was followed by The New Adventures of He-Man in the 1990s and then by the Mike Young Productions series in 2002.

Because this franchise is so popular, it has had even more recent iterations and films. Eternian Epic imagery selected a scene from their favorite episode and brought it to life!

Revolution Sorceress Teela

Recommended music: Air Supply – The One That You Love

Happy Monday, MOTU fans! With this #MastersMonday post, we’re starting to look at Revolution figures in the Mattel Masters of the Universe Masterverse line. First up: Sorceress Teela!

In the first episode of the Netflix Masters of the Universe: Revolution animated series, “Even for Kings,” Teela has a different appearance than in the previous Revelation series. Not only is she now voiced by Melissa Benoist instead of Sarah Michelle Gellar, but she has fully embraced her heritage as the new sorceress of Castle Grayskull. When Scare Glow refuses to relinquish his hold on Fisto and Clamp Champ’s souls, Teela, other Heroic Warriors, and Royal Guard storm into Subternia.

Mattel revealed this Teela and the rest of Masterverse wave 11 at San Diego Comic-Con 2023, a full five months before the January 2024 debut of the Masters of the Universe Revolution series on Netflix. The wave of figures eventually hit store shelves later that spring.

The sculpt and paint on the figure are pretty accurate to the cartoon, and Teela comes with 30 points of articulation, the traditional sorceress staff, an extra set of open hands, and a soft goods cloak that is an improvement from the Sorceress cape earlier in the line, as it no longer needs to attach to the arms. Overall, it’s a good figure and a great way to kick off characters from the new show.

Masters of the Universe Revelation/Revolution turned four years old this year! I “figure” there’ll be a new figure from this series to share here for the rest of the year!

From the Archives: Cringer

Recommended music: Cringer – Sunday

For this post from the archives, we’ve got the penultimate pick on my top 10 action figures from 2024. At #2, it’s the Mattel Masters Of The Universe Origins Cartoon Collection Cringer!

Yes, there was a “Cringer” figure in the Masters of the Universe Classics line back in 2011. However, he was underscaled and lacked articulation. There have also been custom Cringer heads to put on full-size Battle Cat figures as well. However, this is the first time that Mattel has put out a Cringer with articulation for fun cartoony poses. It is the perfect scale for a Prince Adam figure. They both look like they stepped right out of the 1983 Filmation He-Man animated series. I don’t normally collect this line, but when I saw the promotional pics this past spring, I knew I had to have this pair in the collection.

Honorable mention goes to the MOTU Origins Cartoon Collection He-Man, as Mattel really got the look and colors right this time around, and also to the MOTU Origins Collector Vehicle, which looks great, but I didn’t include it on this year’s list as I decided to keep it to figures only.

Scary Skelly

Recommended music: Michael Jackson – Thriller

Happy Halloween! Today, we’ve got another Masters of the Universe collaboration with Eternian Epic Imagery. This week’s theme is “Scary Skelly”

When I thought about this picture, it occurred to me that the Masters of the Universe villain, Goat Man, has a design similar to the iconic red jacket worn by Michael Jackson in the Thriller music video. An idea was born, and I was off to play with some dancing skeletons. 😄

The Eternian Epic Imagery group is celebrating THE Villain of the Century during the scariest time of year. See what Skeletor does best in these exclusive shots captured by our brilliant photo makers, and have a ghoulish, spooky season

From the Archives: Beast Man

Recommended music: Beastie Boys – Ch-Check It Out

For this post from the archives, we’re moving ahead with my list of top 10 action figures from 2024. At #5, it’s the Mattel Masters of the Universe Masterverse 1987 Beast Man!

While there are still a dozen other characters from the 1987 Cannon film that I would like in action figure form, I was very excited that Mattel finally completed the ‘curious quartet’ with this hefty Beast Man figure. While the design is a bit slimmer than the pictured characters previously in the Masters of the Universe Classics line, he still blends in well.

Honorable mention to the nearly-as-long-awaited film version of Evil-Lyn, but I think she was technically a 2023 release.

From the Archives: Castle Grayskull

Recommended music: Nightwish – Walking in the Air (Live)

For this #MastersMonday post from the archives, we’re looking at the final item from 1982 in the vintage Mattel Masters of the Universe line. It’s Castle Grayskull!

Can you imagine waking up on Christmas morning 1982 to unwrap the “FORTRESS OF MYSTERY AND POWER FOR HE-MAN AND HIS FOES”? Well, I’ll have to imagine it as well, as I was only a few months old. 😄

Fortunately, Mattel kept this iconic playset available on store shelves for the better part of a decade, and this young MOTU fan was able to pick one up at some point when a Fisher-Price Little People castle would no longer suffice for the most powerful man in the universe. I’ve been able to acquire a few different Castle Grayskulls in the decades since, and it’s always provided the perfect backdrop for any toy adventure.

From the Archives: Panthor

Recommended music: Steppenwolf – Magic Carpet Ride

Happy Monday, MOTU fans! I hope you had a great weekend. For this #MastersMonday post from the archives, we’re moving on to highlighting 1983 releases from the vintage Mattel Masters of the Universe line. Today, we’re taking a ride with Skeletor’s Savage Cat, Panthor!

Panthor was an easy reuse of the black jungle cat mold from the Tarzan toyline, and though he reused Battle Cat’s saddle, he did not reuse the helmet as originally intended, which was left unique for He-Man’s tiger. The most unique thing about Panthor is his fuzzy surface, as he is flocked from head to toe (until the flocking rubs off during too much battle). 😄

While the original 1983 version of Panthor came packed in a window box by himself, and then in a 2-pack with the original Skeletor figure, and THEN in a gift set which also added in Man-E-Faces, all with artwork by William Garland. Finally, he was reissued in 1984, packed with Battle Armor Skeletor and this artwork by William George.

From the Archives: Wind Raider

Recommended music: Christopher Cross – Ride Like The Wind

Well, here’s another #MastersMonday post from the archives. Today, we’re also looking at the other vehicle released in 1982 in the vintage Mattel Masters of the Universe line. It’s the Wind Raider!

The Wind Raider “Assault Lander” was a smaller flying ship with adjustable (and easily breakable) tail and wings. The grappling hook and winch were actually a neat play feature. This vehicle was also designed by Ted Meyer toy with fantastic packaging art by Rudy Obrero.

The toy notably did not have window packaging art, so you couldn’t actually see how underwhelming the toy looked compared to the inspiring box art. 😄 My vintage Wind Raiders appear to have crashed in the abyss surrounding Castle Grayskull. Therefore, we’ve got this Masters of the Universe Classics Wind Raider as a stand-in.

Recommended music: Powerman 5000 – Space Oddity

Happy Monday, MOTU fans! I hope you had a fantastic weekend. For this #MastersMonday post from the archives, we’re going back to 1982 releases from the vintage Mattel Masters of the Universe line. Today, we’re taking a look at Battle Ram!

The Battle Ram Mobile Launcher was billed as a “Battle Vehicle for He-Man” and was included in the first wave. Most likely the coolest vehicle at the time (as the other early vehicles did not yet have the Filmation series to help make them more appealing), it featured not only a battering ram, but also split apart for a “sky sled” to fly your 5.5” action figure around. The Ted Meyer toy design, Rudy Obrero’s box art made for an excellent release. Unfortunately, my vintage Battle Rams are currently lost, cruising around Eternia at the moment, so I had to use this Masters of the Universe Classics Battle Ram in their place. 😛

Castles and Mountains

Recommended music: Vivaldi – The Four Seasons (Autumn)

Coming at you this #SomethingElseSunday, we’ve got another Masters of the Universe collaboration with Eternian Epic Imagery. This week’s theme is “Castles and Mountains.”

Our theme this week focuses on iconic castles and mountains, as these elements are ever-present as the setting in the Masters of the Universe franchise. My picture idea came to me as I was driving around for work. A perk of my current role is being able to travel around Colorado, and while tourists will visit the Rocky Mountains to check out the fall colors, I simply get to see them during my commute. The shades of yellow really stood out to me from recent photos, and I felt like adding in Heroic Warriors that also may be flying around with yellow in their color scheme. I also added in the redesigned Point Dread as it appears in the Masters of the Universe: Revelation series, and is not actually found in the mountains on the road to Aspen. 😄

Masters of the Universe – Castles and Mountains Collab

From the mighty walls of Castle Grayskull and the menacing peaks of Snake Mountain to the Whisper-Towers of Etheria, the Masters of the Universe saga is defined by its colossal fortresses and forbidding mountain ranges.

Castles are the ultimate seats of power and ancient secrets. Mountains are the silent, protective witnesses to legend.

This is a tribute to the epic scale and enduring prominence of these fortresses and summits in the MOTU and She-Ra Mythos.

Join the crew of Eternian Epic Imagery as we climb the cliffs and unlock the gates. We have the power!

From the Archives: Tri-Klops

Recommended music: The Smashing Pumpkins – Thirty-Three

Here’s another #MastersMonday post from the archives. Today, we’re continuing with 1983 releases from the vintage Mattel Masters of the Universe line, and taking a look at Tri-Klops!

The card back for Tri-Klops mentions he’s “Evil & sees everything” and also that the figure comes with a FREE Warriors Ring! 😄 I’m not sure why Mattel thought they needed the ring gimmick for this release. However, I was certainly glad to see them repeat it for the Masters of the Universe Classics Tri-Klops figure around thirty years later.

The vintage Tri-Klops body is a reuse of the standard He-Man body, but now comes with orange wrist bracers, a new rotating head, and a sword. I always thought his three different eyes were good, evil, and deranged. Apparently, they are explained on the back of the card as a daytime eye, a nighttime eye, and an eye for seeing around corners. 🧐
