Recommended music: Ramin Djawadi – Game of Thrones Main Theme [Season One Opening]
Game of Thrones premiered on HBO on April 17, 2011, and quickly became a TV phenomenon. To celebrate today’s Crystal anniversary, this #FunkoFriday, let’s spotlight the Funko Game of Thrones Legacy Collection Tyrion Lannister!
In the first four seasons of Game of Thrones, Tyrion Lannister changes from a cynical, hedonistic outcast into one of the most pivotal political figures in Westeros. Though his family looks down on him because of his dwarfism, he relies on his intelligence and quick thinking to survive.
After showing his cleverness when captured by the Starks, Tyrion becomes the acting Hand of the King in Season 2. He leads the defense of King’s Landing during the Battle of the Blackwater, using wildfire and smart tactics to save the city, but his father, Tywin, takes the credit.
In Season 3, Tyrion’s power in the story fades, but he becomes more popular with Game of Thrones fans. He is forced to marry Sansa Stark for political reasons, but treats her kindly despite the marriage being strategic. At the same time, he is torn between his feelings for Shae and the dangerous demands of his family.
Season 4 is a turning point for Tyrion. He is blamed for King Joffrey’s murder and faces an unfair trial that leads to his famous confession speech. After being sentenced to death, Jaime helps him escape. Before leaving, Tyrion kills Shae for betraying him and Tywin for years of mistreatment. By the end of the season, he has cut ties with House Lannister and becomes a fugitive heading to Essos.
Around the time of Season 4, Funko moved away from its usual Pop! vinyl and other stylized figures in 2014, when they released the Game of Thrones Legacy Collection, which features fully articulated 1/12-scale action figures. Tyrion Lannister came in two main versions: this standard armored ‘Battle of the Blackwater’ figure and an exclusive ‘Hand of the King’ variant.
Tyrion is a little shorter than the other figures, but his proportions fit well with the rest of the line. The sculpt has a lot of I’ve actually bought this figure a few times, so I could swap the head with the Hand of the King variant, since I think that version looks more like Tyrion actor Peter Dinklage.
While the figures in this line feature over 20 points of articulation, the line is known for quality-control issues, such as stuck and otherwise fragile joints. For accessories, Tyrion only comes with a small battle axe, but the convention-exclusive version also includes a helmet, which fits the Battle of the Blackwater theme.
You can get all 14 figures in this line for a pretty good price. Just watch out for the joints if you want to pose them. We’ll talk about more toys from Westeros soon. Happy 15th anniversary, Game of Thrones!
