Jon Snow

Recommended music: Soundgarden – Fell On Black Days

I know it’s not Friday morning, but for the next few months, #WhateverWednesday will also be #WesterosWednesday here. Since HBO’s Game of Thrones just celebrated its 15th anniversary, let’s travel to Westeros and check out the Funko Game of Thrones Legacy Collection Jon Snow!

In the first season of Game of Thrones, Jon Snow starts out as the Bastard of Winterfell, searching for identity and honor in the Night’s Watch. His idealistic view of the Wall quickly fades, and he has to leave behind his privileged background for the harsh life at the Wall and the painful news of Ned Stark’s execution.

In Season two, Jon heads into the far North and grows from a sheltered recruit into a practical survivor. To join the Wildlings, he has to kill his mentor, Qhorin Halfhand, showing his dedication to the greater good: “You know nothing, Jon Snow.” In Season three, Jon faces a tough choice between his vows and his feelings for Ygritte. In the end, he puts duty first and betrays the Wildlings to warn the Night’s Watch about the coming attack.

Season four is a turning point for Jon. In the Battle of Castle Black, he takes charge and helps defend the Wall against Mance Rayder’s army. The season ends with Ygritte’s tragic death and Stannis Baratheon’s arrival, marking Jon’s growth from an outsider to a strong leader shaped by hardship.

In 2014, around the release of Season Four, Funko tried something different from their usual Pop! vinyl and stylized figures. They launched the Game of Thrones Legacy Collection, starting with a fully articulated 1/12-scale Jon Snow as the first figure in the series.

Gentle Giant sculpted the figure, and it looks somewhat like Kit Harrington as Jon Snow, though the expression is a bit plain. The Night’s Watch outfit is detailed and textured, with a white wash that gives it a snowy look. The cape is nicely made and can be removed if you want. The scabbard holds the only accessory, Jon’s sword Longclaw, complete with the wolf head handle. Some figures in this line can have stiff or fragile joints, but I haven’t had any problems with the Jon Snows I bought.

Overall, this was a strong start for the series. I only wish they had made more figures with costumes from later seasons and storylines. I’ll share more about other Game of Thrones toys soon. Happy 15th anniversary, Game of Thrones!
